No, I'm not crazy! I would like to live there!!greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
I am looking for rural, vacant, unimproved land that is being sold cheaply because the winters are brutal with lots and lots of snow, that nobody has considered selling because,,, " You have to be crazy to live there" about 10 acres +/-. Thanks

Montana. You can buy a mansion size house for practically nothing and the winters can get down to 80º below zero!

the prime areas of Montana became extremely expensive in the last decade but it's a big place so there's still some bargains left, especially if you don't mind being 60+ miles from town. Get a copy of the Montana Land magazine in or around Montana or from their website, montanalandmagazine.com. The main newspaper for most of the state is online at billingsgazette.com Most of the cheaper land is sold in bigger parcels than 10 acres.Minnesota and North Dakota would probably have more of what you're looking for.

Hey Steve! You are no longer in the Corp. Life is short. You can be crazy anywhere. Get all the sunshine you can.My best neighbor is Montana cowboy bred and born. He loves Montana, but he enjoyed his first wife and being cold about all he could.

Hey Stephen I know of two properties in North Dakota if your interested. One house sits on 7 acres and the other sits on 4. Both are priced between 15-20k. Email if you want some information.Rita

Rita, Where are yo uin north Dakota? You gotta look for it, but land is cheaper here and this is the least populated state in the union!

Steve, Your best buys in land or land with a house will not be advertised. Select the area you want to be in and knock on a few doors and ask about property in the area. Most people are very helpful, but on occasins you will encounter some rude & crude people. Do not let this type discourage you. Your sincerity will win out in the long run. good luck!

Just a few days ago, someone posted a for sale by owner farm in Nebraska that sounded pretty nice. Did you check it out?
-- marilyn (rainbow@ktis.net), March 06, 2002.
Novina, I'm not in North Dakota, I just know of two available houses there, one from a Realtor and the other is from a private owner. I came across these two homes in my quest for my homestead and at the time they were under contract, but once again they are available. I'm still in Virginia getting ready to go to South Dakota!Rita

Well heres an overlooked place- Tug Hill, NY. It is the entire area located between the Adirondacks and Lake ontario- some of the heaviest snowfall in the US- mostly deserted with abandoned farms. Lots of blackflies, however. Great troutfishin.

Hello Stephen,There is this adverstisement I see occasionally in Backwood Home and Countryside magazines about land for sale in Canada. Several years ago my wife and I looked at the location of each of the properties and found out that all of them that were very inexpensive were in the very far northern interior of the country. If you like that kind of place I suggest you look for the ad and check into some of the deals.
Sincerely,
Ernest

Canada has some advantages, no health insurance needed, and American money goes 60% further! We need good people coming in, Americans in general blend right in with us! North Central Ontario around North Bay Cheap, pretty, cold and close to civilised shopping. Or head north and trade your beaver pelts for whiskey! :^)

Heck no, Stephen, snow's against my religion! -LOL- I live in the sunbelt and put on sweatshirts when the temp drops below 70º. I could never survive in that cold climate.
Use google.com to bring up Montana newspapers and look at the real estate ads.
