The current psychiatric consensus is that Schizophrenia is a brain disease along the lines of Parkinsons and MS. T. Szasz suggests it is odd that, unlike sufferers of other brain diseases, schizophrenics are sometimes forced to have treatment without their consent.

I would like to know if this only occurs when a patient is behaving in a violent way, or whether patients are ever given ECT to eradicate merely eccentric/"inappropriate" behaviour along the lines of McMurphy's treatment in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
