When is the best time for a pastor to go on vacation? Many (married)colleagues enjoy vacation time during the summer months. However, the period of winter is fine for me since I live in "the Great White North." It takes the edge off of "cabin fever." How long and how often should a pastor enjoy "a holiday?"

I'm beginning to think that a series of mini-vacations, perhaps quarterly is good for pastors. Recently, I found that I had not taken any time off in the last 5 years and realized that my batteries were flat. So in December, I visited my son in College Station, attended the A&M Bowl game, taking time away from church, wife, little kids, and just kicked back for three days. Now, I'm ready to do it again.

Maintaining one day per week as a sabbath will go a long way towards staying fresh. Many pastors will take vacation, but in the meantime they'll work 7 days per week. My own pastor told us he's been convicted of this lately, and will affirm that it's actually a temptation area for him. The list of things to do can seem so long at times.

It is important to take some time for yourself. After giving so much of "self," take time to revive "self." One day a week is important as well to unwind physically and mentally. We should not be ashamed to admit that we require moments to rejuvenate our own selves physically, mentally, and spiritually.
