I got up this morning and went out to check on my chickens, it was suppose to have gotten down to about 9 degrees through the night so I was concerned if my chickens made it through the night. I have a light on a timer that comes on about 2:30 a.m. Some of my chickens have already laid their egg by the time I get up. So this morning when I checked on the chickens they were all alive and healthy but 4 out of 7 eggs were already frozen and cracked wide open. My wife thinks the eggs were already frozen when the chicken laid them!

Can chickens lay a frozen egg...ouch !! Some of mine freeze also by the time I get to the coop in the morning. I usually give these to the dogs and cats with their food. I think possibly some bacteria would get into them so don't know how safe they would be for us humans. I don't put a light on mine and it gets mighty cold where we are too. Still get plenty of eggs and never have lost a chicken to the cold, that I know of.

I'm not happy when I find frozen eggs... But I think I was more depressed when I found the week-old baby bunnies frozen today.... Mama bunnie was still trying to nurse them. DE PRESSING.I will try again next month. It SHOULD be warmer!!
