When buying a camera, general you get a "default" lense. I would like to purchase a camera body only (Nikon N65, second choice Cannon Rebel 2000) and then select a 28-200 lense (Sigma/Tamron). I don't want to be walking around with more then one lense and have to make a change. Pictures will be basic family shots, bit of moving and outdoor type of shots. I enjoy the final product as a slide verse a print.

Any thoughts/suggestions. My old camera (20 years ago) was a simple Konica 35mm. Worked fine except I would have liked a zoom on it.

How about Canon's 28-135/IS?

While not quite as long as a 28-200 the difference between 135 and 200 is not that great and the inclusion of IS makes this an excellent chocie for a single lens. The lens quality is very good and much better than any 28-200.

It does mean that you'd have to go with the Rebel 2000 but that's also a decent camera - lightweight so an good candidate for what you seem to require.

If you MUST have a 28-200, why not Canon's own? You'll get far better results and compatibility, as well as their being a USM version (albeit only micro-USM).

My personal choice in the BIG zoom range lenses would be the Canon 35-350, although I suspect this is a little out of your price range.

Otherwise, I go with the 24-85, 28-105 or 28-135.
