O.k. sorry Joy for starting a whole new thread just to get my questions answered but sheesh.........with our thread drift (which I love) have you ever tryed to search the archives for something that you just KNOW is there someplace???

Polly..........I know the question has been asked but I can't find your answer.........what kind of glue are you using to attach your seeds to the paper towel??

Jay........last fall I transplanted a big bunch of plants in very large containers and put in a layer of compost from my heap. Apparently there were either some worms or worm eggs because when I watered the other day I found a very nice layer of worm casings at the top. Now, should I feed these worms to keep them alive until I put the containers back outside, and if so WHAT???

Polly, are we talking conversion to vermaculture or SFG?? ;>) SFG, done it off and on for years.......vermaculture, been considering it for some time now. I actually was thinking about my back more than anything with those paper towels. I can sit at the table and glare at the snow and glue seeds. Think I could melt the snow with glares??

OK guys, I have a stupid question. When you plant the paper square towels, do you lay them seed side up or down? Last year I used TP and I was less than thrilled with the spotty germination on some of them. Maybe I covered them too deep, but I was trying to be careful. The turnips and spinach worked the best. But for ease of planting it was wonderful. I even did a border of those cheap 10 cent packs of mixed flowers, just beautiful. But what went wrong with lettuce and carrots?

Sure, Diane, go ahead and do a back up, if you want to. I haven't had time to try out the instructions, so if it's working for you, that's probably safer.

That leads me to a question of my own. Opinions solicited: Should I delete some of the older threads? Not the informational ones, but some of the goofy ones -- jokes, or "take this online quiz", or oldest "chat" threads? How long should I keep the over the fence chat threads? Six months? A year? NEVER delete them?

I really enjoy thread drift too -- makes it more like a conversation. But it sure does make it hard to find something!

Untill you put the containers outside, try putting a little cornmeal, some fine mulched leaves or blend some veggie scraps and water and pour the slurry in the containers and cover it (you will feed the worms and water nutrient the plants at the same time).

This season I am trying "quilted" 2 ply paper towels without reinforcing threads. Pick a hole in one side of the quilted puff, insert the seed in the pocket. Near perfect 1 foot square and no glue mess. Let you know how it works.

Diane; No, just using the paper towels to pre-make planting squares. Does feel like you're actually almost sorta gardening, doesn't it?!

Vicki; I planted 'em seed side up and had no problems with germination. Carrots seemed to take forever to germinate, but finally came up. This year, I glued 4 radish seeds to each carrot square, just so I could see SOMETHING coming up in that spot.

Jay; I used two-plys last year, but they were really cheap ones; I didn't think about tucking the seeds down in between the layers a bit.

Joy; I like going back and reading the OTFs - kind of like a journal. The only thing I would like to see deleted are the "new member" type threads, so there are no hard feelings when new folks come aboard.

Y'all; anybody wanna come over and help me transplant tomato seedlings!?! Some aren't even germinated, others are ready to transplant!
