Do you have 500 or more US dollars so you can buy a DVD burner? Are you willing to potentially spend additional hundreds of dollars on video software of various kinds for your PC? Please consider a more reasonable and cheaper alternative - just buy a cheap Apex DVD player at Circuit City and give up on your PS2. Apex makes a lot of really good single disc players (do NOT buy their 3 disc changers as these have lots of quality problems) that play CD-R and CD-RW media and support VCD, SVCD and MP3. I think one of their models is only 99 bucks. Surely it would make more sense to just buy a new DVD player rather than pay a fortune to get into DVD burning. By the way, DVD media is at best about $5 a disc and often a lot more.

FYI - They are less than $1 if you look in the right places or buy in bulk

Pioneer's new DVD burner is list priced at $299. I haven't fully looked at the specs, but you can master with Pioneer's other DVD burners, so this one probably will as well. I don't believe that other PC-based DVD burners are able to produce masters, including the Mac drive.Cheers,

Let's pretend we're billionaires with a lot of time and would like to have this question answered (please). How do you convert the vcd (dat) files to DVD file format? There are a million tools out there to convert DVD to VCD's but none the other way around other than commercial products like U-Lead. Are there any freeware tools out there. Direct answer please.

OK, mr billionaire who doesn't want to spend money.
1. copy the .dat file from the VCD to your hard disk.
2. rename it with an .mpeg extension.
3. convert it to an mpeg2 file.
4. burn it with a DVD burner.
Steps 3 and 4 /will/ cost you money. Mpeg2 is a licensed format; any converter /will/ cost money; there is no freeware, only trial versions of some commercial software. And (obviously) you will need a DVD burner, which will also cost money.
