Whoa 19 degrees in sunny NW FLAgreenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread |
Well howdy, We had our first taste of winter last night-already have corn and tomatoes in the garden. It is spring here, but woke up to an 18 foot banana tree icicle. What happened to globle warming? :>), Daryll

You beat us by five degrees, we only went to 24.Surprised you put in corn and tomatoes so early. We nearly always have a frost not long before Easter.
I'll be putting my corn in come April.
Sure hope I didn't lose much of my new leaves on the fruit trees and blueberries. That two weeks of 70-80 weather we got in late January caused a lot of trouble.

Hi Alan, I start planting Feb 14th,usually the sprinklers take care of any cold weather we have after that. Mostly we have southwest winds from the gulf to keep the climate mild, but last night freezing northwest winds swooped down on us! Looks like I'll be replanting some of the corn and tomatoes-I'm ready for summer. Daryll

Well heck, now I don't feel so bad waking up to our balmy 8* up here in Illinois this am - and we're up to 29* already! Pop says it's just warming up to catch us off guard for when the snowballs start bopping us in the butt again on Friday! I just hope to be able to make it home from town Saturday morning after work! I may have to do my shopping after work in the morning instead of Sat. am - one of the stores has got some awfully good sales on this week for stocking up!Hmmmm - I've got snow and Daryll's got frozen bananas...I just love banana ice cream!!

Geez, Daryll, that's too bad about the banana tree. Perhaps you can regrow it from the stump?Global warming is referring to the OVERALL trend. What it means in practical terms, is very weird and changeable weather, including all the big storms. I'm glad we haven't, so far, gotten an ice storm! That's worse than a big snowstorm.

We had 11 last night. I'm mourning the loss of my early plum buds. Hope I get enough for at least a small batch of wine this season.

Oh goodie, and spring break is to "officially" start this weekend, I can't wait to see all those college kids go flying into the ocean and hit that nice warm water, NOT!!! Will be like the polar bear club those that are brave (or drunk) enough to bare some skin and hit the beaches! Sure glad we aren't going to Daytona THIS year, I prefer to be able to leave the long johns at home on a Florida vacation ;-)!!!

Oh, it's supposed to warm up this weekend though it may rain. The kids will still be able to come down to Daytona, Ft. Lauderdale, Pensacola or Panama City and do all the idiotic things that college students do on Spring Break. We'll happily take their money and send them home again afterwards, except for the ones that are in jail, the hospital or dead. Fifteen years in a university town and I have a poor opinion of the intelligence of college students... ; ).......Alan.

Here in Jacksonville we broke the record of 26 and went down 1 degres to 25 but it did get a little colder where I live (they measure the temp out at the air port)expecting another cold one tonight mid to high 20's. Thankfully I haven't put anything in yet except taters. Grandpa always said to wait till the first weekend of March so thats law around here!!hehehe

I noticed the buds on the trees and all the animals were starting to shed...then it got cold again.

WE have -3c here with a -10 windchill. No chance of shedding my longjohns for some time!

Well, they said yesterday that it was going to warm up and last night it did warm up - by two degrees! We only dropped to twenty six!I was expecting it to freeze again so I didn't bother to unbag the trees and blueberries so shouldn't have any more damage than we already had.
Supposed to start getting stormy by tonight so I'll have to unwrap stuff today. My wife's grandparents are coming in today so I'll want to give them the tour anyways.
