Has anyone ever raised a 6 wk old lamb by itself.??greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
I'm going to keep this lamb in a box stall until we can get a lead line on it and bring it out to a huge pen. We would leave it out during day with 1 turkey and chickens. We also have dogs that will be going and checking it out... I really don't want to get another one right now. So maybe you can tell some stories about how you have just one... Thanks James

James, I would not tie out a lamb. They can tangle themselves, but more important is the possibility of a stray dog coming around and they are easy prey. My in laws had 3 on tie outs last year and when they went to Church, something scared the lambs and they all hung themselves trying to get loose. Maybe you could rig up a portable pen with the 16 foot cattle or hog panels and just keep moving it around, sort of like a chicken tractor. I know you don't really want two, but they will do so much better than by themselves.

I have one right now that I raised last year. She thinks she is a dog and wants nothing to do with the rest of the sheep altho she hangs around in their vicinity if i put her out with them. Most of the time she just stays by the fence closest to the house in case someone should come out the she can call to to let her out. She lives in a shed all by herself now as the rest of the critters are on another place for the winter and she seem very happy altho she wants to come in the house if she is out in the yard. Shes just a great big baby now and also a bit of a pain if I'm out in the yard but she loves to go for walks with us and the dogs. Good luck. Cindy
