Baby goat with runny eyes... What should I do?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I have twin does that are 3 days old. One of them has CLEAR drainage from both eyes. Very excessive amount of tears... so much that dirt & hay are sticking to her face. I have flushed her eyes gently with saline and wiped them dry, but the excess tears are constantly there. Any ideas why, or how to treat it? The other doe seems fine.

Thanks guys!

Bring the goat in the house and shine a strong flashlight in the eye. Does she have any eyelashes pointing in towards the eyeball? It is usually inverted eyelashes, sometimes so minimal that you can just roll the eyelid out away and hold it their for awhile, and it fixes itself. Otherwise a quick snip and it is fixed, email me privately if you want the directions. Vicki

If it doesn't appear to be eye irritation, consider pink eye (infectious keratoconjunctivitis). It would help explain the excessive flow of tears. Take the kid into your vet and have them take a look. If so, there are topical treatments to help. Pink eye, left untreated, can cause blindness. SWAG on my part.

I have been very successful in using a dab of triple antibiotic in my kid goats eyes when this happens. Can't hurt. In His Grace, Sissy

thanks guys, I started using triple antibiotic in her eyes yesterday and I'm going to try the flashlight idea. I never thought about it being eyelashes. I don't think it's pink eye... doesn't look the same. Thanks so much!
