Southeastern Oklahoma

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

Hi everyone, we are considering relocating in a couple of years. One of the areas we are looking at is southeastern Oklahoma. We will be taking a vacation there later this year, but would be interested in finding out more about this area from people who are familiar with that area, or from people who live there. My husband is a mechanic, I am a nurse, my mom is retired, and my sister works as a csm for internet, cable, and cell phone industries. I plan to homeschool our 3 year old, and would be interested in purchasing(wherever we relocate) anywhere from 5 to 100 acres with two dwellings, outbuildings, and GOOD WATER. Thanks everyone!!

How far southeastern? My husband has a grandfather in Tahlequah, it's really beautiful around there. If that's close, I could probably get you some more info. on the economy and such.

Hi, Christine. Thanks, any and all information sure would be appreciated. I've heard that Tahlequah is beautiful. My great- grandparents were from the Buffalo Valley area, they are long deceased.

My Dad was from Checotah/ Muskogee area. Every year we would come to visit for a few weeks in the summer. I always thought that Buffalo Valley was just beautiful. Wilburton and the Robbers Cave area ,too. Not too much in the way of economy but a good mechanic shouldn't have too much trouble. The last time I checked, land was very cheap but it was also pretty rugged. Lots of stuff left over from some kind of mining that was a big mess. I always thought we would go back there to b near my dad's family but it hasn't happened and now most of them are gone.

Gina, don't give up on me. It's been kind of frantic around here this week, and I haven't gotten hold of Grandpa yet! Just wanted you to know I haven't forgotten you!

Hi Gina,

Oklahoma is the BEST state to homeschool in. The freedom to homeschool is actually a part of the state constitution.

Christine is right about the Talequah area being beautiful. That is the area I am from. Lots of mountains (don't qualify as official mountains but are big :-) ), lots of trees and in the spring beautiful Dogwoods and Redbuds, near a beautiful lake (Tenkiller Lake) and it is the capitol of the Chrerokee Nation.

I don't know about the water as we we actually lived just inside Muskogee county so we had rural city water not well water. There are two hospitals there I believe. One is the Indian hospital. Haven't lived there for about twelve years so am not sure about the present economy.

Thanks everyone for your responses, I won't give up Christine, I know what you mean about frantic, same here. We are really excited about visiting, don't know yet when that will be. I have visited some links to Muskogee and Talequah information, and liked what I saw. Thanks again everyone!!
