Some Indiana car owners whose license plates expire at the end of February may not get their renewal notices because of a computer error, a Bureau of Motor Vehicles official confirmed Tuesday.

The BMV sends renewal notices annually to all vehicle owners, but, around the state, nearly 16,000 notices for registrations expiring at the end of February were not sent due to the computer error, said Kelly Duncan, BMV spokesperson in Indianapolis. The BMV was made aware of the problem after a number of calls last week.

“It’s mainly a delay,” Duncan said. “People are getting them later than they normally do.

The missing notices should be received eventually, Duncan added.

Drivers who have not received the notices should visit their local BMV office before their licenses expire at the end of February. License plates that expire in February are those belonging to people whose last names begin with A or B.

The renewal notices are not needed to get new license registrations, and Duncan encouraged drivers to check their plates to see when they expire.

“We don’t know how widespread it is, but we’re looking to see if there was a computer glitch,” Duncan said.
