The vet will not sew him up?? I would get a new vet if that is the case.

I know with people it's common to avoid stitching dog bites because of the probability of infection.

Ive always heard bull mastiffs are good with animals,, how long were the 2 together? Why do you think it happened now?

if you want to use herbs....echinacea for 6 days might help. i don't know goat anatomy, but in humans it increase the production of white blood cells to fight infection. do goats have white blood cells? also, I would give comfrey internally (let him eat it) root and leaf if you can get it. it will help him mend. you could do comfrey tea poultices on the outside of the neck to help some too.grapefruit seed extract if you can get it is an excellent microbial. give it internally and put it on externally as well, mixed in with the tea poultice. stitching might not be a good thing, depending upon how deep it is, but keep it bandaged.
if you have any Rescue Remedy or can get it at the natural food store, it works wonders with animals. Also, if he has any other unusual symptoms, consult an animal homeopathy book, but Aconite can often help with other things arising after a severe scare.
I am sorry about the dog. That is rough. He must have been hard to get off the goat too. You are lucky you didn't get bit yourself. I would recommend this: if you are going to put him down have the vet do it. If you are going to "do it yourself" or have someone you know do it, tie him up and BE CAREFUL. Dogs are supposed to be extremely hard to shoot accurately and knock down, from all I have been told by people with experience. One has been hunting his whole life and is good at it, but says dogs are particularly difficult (we had problems with a pack of dogs around here for a while, and now I am learning to shoot as a result...that and the cougar....)
I am very sorry. You must be feeling sad.

Scott, has the dog done this before? what is the reason for this behavior?I ask because I have a Great pyer and a Nubian that played so rough I thought the dog was hurting the goat I took off runing and screaming at the dog to break them up when I got into reach they both Looked at me like "what the heck is wrong with you?"I let my buck out to play with her while I clean His pen,The dog will let him know when shes had enough she bares her teeth and snaps at him the goat backs off.Maybe your dog overdone it.Pam

You've got a killer dog (that is, a dog that has been bred to be a killer). You have an animal that it has decided is a suitable thing for it to kill. You have some decisions to make. Fact is, you MIGHT be able to sort this situation out, but it would be real hard. You have some decisions to make.

So sorry for your situation scott. A dog that won't be called off needs to be a dead dog IMHO.

The dosage of your penicillin (any 300,000 unit pen) is dosed at 3cc per 50 pounds subq, twice a day for 7 to 10 days in a case like this, normally 5 days would be fine and you only need to give it once a day unless the animal is ill or in this case likely to get infected. Make sure you are updated on Tetanus. Aspirin dose is also way to low, but I also would be giving Probios, etc. to protect the rumen from the aspirin. A full grown doe would need nearly 15 aspirin, go to saanendoah.com to get a dosage. Surprised the vet didn't give you banamine.I would bet the dog will be back, sounds like you need a Guardian for your place. You are also very lucky this isn't fly season or you would have a permanant house guest for awhile! Vicki
