I am new to b&w photography. Can anyone offer any advice on filters, especially for snowy landscape pictures?

I Assume you are shooting on a sunny day. Under those conditions the shadows on the snow are being illuminated by the rest of the sky - which is blue light. To darken these shadows, you want something that filters out blue light and so increases the shadow density. A light yellow filter will do this to a slight extent, a dark yellow more so, an orange filter even more and a red filter will make dramatic shadows. Also, since the "grain" on a snow scene is really shadows of the snow texture, these filters will also bring out the texture of the snow. You need to test the different filters for the effect you want.
