Did the Durham and Southern Railroad ever run passenger service or mixed trains? I have seen, in one of the railroad guides that the D&S owned several passenger cars, but that was all the information it listed. Thanks.

D&S wooden caboose X-83 still had a facing pair of flipover coach seats in place of one of the bunks in 1976.

Just as a curiousity....

Lines South ran an article in 4th qtr. 1998 titled "When Tiny D & S Hosted the Mighty Silver Star" written by Arthur Waldrop and Ted Shrady. It details a "detour" of Train No. 21 over the D&S on May 20, 1960 due to a derailment of the Seaboard freight No. 27 (Capital). Mr. Smith was aboard the train on business car "Southland".

Not really on point...but probably the last time major passenger equipment moved over the Durham-Apex line????

The June, 1934, Official Guide lists passenger trains No. 11-12 as running the length of the railroad. By December, 1941, these trains had become mixed trains, and by November of 1950, they were no longer listed.

The Annual reports show that all passenger cars were gone in 1944.They still had passenger service in 1941 I have a ticket my grand mother got to go from Angier to Varina so service stopped between 42 and 43. In 1942 there were several passenger cars left by 1943 only one car remained.I have seen a photo of a coach I forget the number it is a open platform car.Several of the cars came for the Cape Fear & Northern Rwy a predecessor line. At least 1 coach came from Southern Iron & Equiptment second
