my wyndotts first egg was a double yolk but she hasent layed a double since, only single. is this common?? cody

Hi Cody Double yolkers are most often laid by young birds whose system hasn't quite settled into a routine. Even though she has been laying 'normal' eggs since, she may still lay more double yolkers before she settles into a regular routine.

Aren't double yolkers a wonderful surprise! My mother - in-law use to raise chickens and she would get double yolkers once in awhile.

Cody, I often get double yolks in first eggs and last eggs (before and after molt). Some of my hens quit laying for the shortest days of winter and when they resume I get doubles sometimes. In fact, I have a double in the fridge right now (it's about the size of a goose egg so I'm assuming!)from an araucana who just stopped. She's a bit odd...she's been laying straight through then when all the other hens resumed, she stopped. Oh well, takes all kinds!

I have one old hen (at least 3..could be 5) who lays a double yolker every single time. They are long and pointy. But......like the others said..its not usually like that. They are a nice surprize huh????

My wife is always preachin' to me telling me that I shouldn't have more than two eggs for breakfast. So when I get a couple of double yolkers I fry them both and tell her that I only cracked open two eggs! And then I enjoy myself.

You can usually tell by the size of our eggs if it is a "double- yolker" and when my girls see it they always ask for it to be cooked for them (whoever gets it first--I have two daughters). They are kind of like getting a present unexpectedly. :^)

I love the double yokers! I have a Rhode Island that lays them pretty consistently. One day I got an exceptionally large one so I measured it, it was 6" around (outside measurement of course) and almost 4" hight at 3 15/16". It wouldn't fit in the carton.
