Gulp, I cut my hair!!! lolgreenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread |
Wow, it only took how many years of living with a really bad perm? lol My hair has been at my waist for almost 7 years now and about half that for lots longer. At 46, I just got tired of dealing with the split ends that seemed to never end and waiting for this awful mess to grow off. It's just about touching my shoulders, which feels odd to me. Most of the gunk is off now, but now I find that my natural and greying hair is growing back in wavy. lol Go figure. I could've saved myself all that money for such an awful experience and let nature do it's own thing.I know this sounds very funny to be ranting about something like this in a forum, but I'm sooooo unnerved about it that I can't sit still. And I'm afraid I'll go in the kitchen and make myself a comforting pan of brownies and sit on the floor and eat the whole thing before hubby gets home. lol I just don't want to have the Thursday weigh-in be a disappointment. lol
I didn't realize how emotional my hair was for me. lol Anyone else feel this goofey? lol
Thanks for letting me rant.
Iris

I'm sure it was a hard decision, Probably feels a lot lighter though. You will love it once you get used to it!I have been trying to get my hair to grow, but it doesn't get much longer, just thicker, then I can't comb it, drives me crazy!

WOW Iris! Without the extra weight, your hair is able to spring back and be bouncy. I love getting a hair cut, I feel better about myself, because I know that I look better. Enjoy!

I, too, used to be able to sit on my hair. Now, I have it 1 1/2 inches long and spikey. (I'm 47 years old and teach art. My kids think I am cool.)

Iris--- I'm an old hairdresser-----& today I got my hair cut-----it feels wonderful!!!!!To make a real long story shorter-----my parents would not let me get my hair cut when I was growing up---until I was 16 years of age---- not religion reasons-----just that was their thoughts--
So when I was on my own-----it has been short!!!! Really short at times!!
When I was growing up/ every one would remember me /as the one with the long hair-----well- what brains did it take to grow hair--was my feelings!!!!!! I wanted to have a better "claim to fame" than I could grow hair!!!!! ha!!
So for many/many /many moons my hair has been short!!!!! Well I use to cut my own hair all the time---didn't have time to go to someone else---plus couldn't find anyone who usually would cut it the way I wanted!
Well as I got older---couldn't see worth a darn---but I couldn't cut my hair with my glasses off-----so it became a real problem-either cut by feel---or go to someone else--
So for the last about 20 years my cousin who is a hairdresser has cut my hair--or straighten up /what a mess I made out of it!! ha! Plus I'm allergic to all chemicals & she would be careful what was used on me!!
Well my cousin had really bad health problems & was off work for over 6 months----so I had been cutting my own hair-----with my glasses off!!!!---then really hated to put them back on & see what a bad job I had done!!! ha!
Well today(praise God --answered prayer- my cousin got to return to work)--my cousin cut my hair-----she FORGOT & used chemicals on me & I'm puffed up like a toad & my face is swollen twice the size it should be---my ears look like huge swollen elephant ears---I can't breath----I itch & burn all over my face & head & neck---etc/etc/etc/- --but my hair is cut!!!!!! As soon as I got home /I stuck my head under the water & rinsed & rinsed & rinsed!!!!! Washed my face---etc/etc/etc/-----
but I will recoup-----& my hair is even & cut----I can even put my glasses on & look in the mirror----can barely see out of my swollen eyes---but my hair is even /for the first time--in months-----
You will get use to your hair-----if you are over 40 it is an old rule (from old hairdressers) that all women should not have their hair below sholder length unless they wear it up--unless they want to add 20 years to their looks!!!! I'm sure you look 20 years younger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been more upset over the years/ because I have gone & paid good money & gotten a worse hair cut /than I could have done my self with my glasses off!!! ha!!!
Just start thinking about your hair differently-----think of different ways you can wear it----just remember you look 20 years younger!!!! You Go GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You young thing!!!!!!!!!!! ha!! Just trying to make you feel better---as change is sometimes hard to deal with---
I want you to know /that about 6 years ago---I cut a friends hair---- we had gone to school together --a hundred years ago-----& I had cut her hair off & on for over 35 years----- one time I was visiting her & she wanted me to cut her hair---- not just a trim----but a total change for her----I talked to her about it/ asked if she was sure----etc/etc/etc/etc/---I had her show me pictures of what she had in mind----we talked about how she would need to care for that style--etc/etc/etc/---- THEN I CUT HER HAIR------SHE CUSSED ME-----CALLED ME EVERY NAME IN THE BOOK & TOLD ME SHE WANTED IT LONG AGAIN---SHE DIDN'T LIKE IT AFTER ALL!!!! She wanted it the way it was before!!! ETC/ETC/ETC/
Well I send her birthday cards & Christmas cards & I pray for her---- but she has not spoken to me since-----all her family says/ she keeps her hair just as I cut it(several years ago now)---has not changed the style----but she still hates me for cutting her long hair- off!!!!! ---She could have grown it back by now /about 600 times----- but still has not forgiven me /as she had LONG hair & now she doesn't!!!! Everyone says /she looks a million times better & younger- --but she still hates me for doing what she asked --- & I did it for free---- Next time I would refuse tyo do it-----or at least charged-if I was going to do my best & get cussed for it---- I think she knows she looks better & still wants to blame someone that she doesn't have that long stringy stuff any more -----very, very few people truely look good in long hair!!!!!
Go look at yourself in the morror & see the new younger looking person you are & think about all the new ways you can wear it!!!!! go figure!!!! I hope you get over it before my friend ---ha!!(or maybe should say ex-friend!!!) ha!

I remember when my mom cut my waist-long hair to shoulder length in high school. I loved it, but my brother mourned my "loss" and took a lock of it to save! I just thought brothers were wierd. Now I love long hair--on someone else! My husband loves it--on me! Actually, I wouldn't mind it so much, but it's so thick and heavy and split-endy. I usually wear it in a braid down my back, but it's hot and in the way. If I pin it up, I get a headache. And there are all sorts of annoying loose ends all around my face. So, I'm thinking of some sort of compromise--a way to keep some of the length without the heat and the headache.
-- Cathy N. (keeper8@attcanada.ca), January 15, 2002.
well Dearest Cathy, we could always shave all your hair off, and send it away for a good cause, then buy you a pretty bonnet . I remember in grade eight , my hair was nice and long, so i got a perm thinking it would be like MAGIC. Well it turned out to be a friz ball. Silly me let my friend take the scizzors to my hair. I ended up with hair that was chopped to my ears or higher. I was a regular tom boy. Ever since then i'v cut my own hair off and on, until last time i went to a hair dresser, finally my hair is almost to the middle of my back. LOOKS A LOT NICER. =) SMILES. Don't fret.

It must be hair problem day! I , too, have thick, heavy, wavy hair. I wear it between chin length and shoulder length now. I keep it one length so I can pull it back in a ponytail and still look decent. I can tell when I need a haircut: the weight of the ponytail makes my neck hurt!! People think I'm crazy, but it's true. Another true fact: you can have too much hair (too thick). I've been getting the under layers thinned, but then you have all these short hairs sticking out........... My dilemma now: I am considering growing out my bangs. My hair grows fast, so it won't take too long, but it is still a problem as to what to do with them since my hair is wavy and thick.......I try to "contol" it with electric curlers and curling irons.........it is not curly enough to just wear "natural", just wavy enough to be a problem............ BUT, my mom went through chemo and lost her hair.........so I am grateful, really !!
-- conniein nm (karrelandconnie@msn.com), January 16, 2002.
I pull all my hair back on a hair band. It is one of those kind that slides through your hair like a comb, then hooks underneath. I am letting my bangs grow out, so it is off my face and out of the way. It really looks OK, like this and I don't have to curl, dry anything. No fuss!
-- Melissa (me@home.net), January 16, 2002.
I have had short hair for years, usually not permed, straight as a stick. All the time I worked (an RN hardly sits still!) I would sweat so much, water dripped off the ends of my hair, so I needed to keep it short so that I could wash it every day and not have to use dryer or curling iron. Haven't worked for several years, but haven't changed the style. Still need to wash nearly every day. Just part it on the side, give it a lick and promise and ready for the day. Daughter had hair long enough to sit on, then 2 years ago (age 33) she had it cut to shoulder length and gave the cut hair to Locks of Love (?) to make wigs for cancer kids.

When I was a kid, I wsn't allowed to have long hair, which is what I always wanted. Once I was grown and finally let it grow, I have really cut it since. I do get it trimmed a couple times of year. It's baby fine very shiny and very soft. It could never be long enough for me.
-- Cindy (SE. IN) (atilrthehony@hotmail.com), January 16, 2002.
I keep threatening to cut mine, and Lance keeps threatening to divore me (I'm REAL scared :)). Connie and I must have the same hair -- mine is long, thick and wavy. It's almost to my waist, and I've been thinking seriously about shortening it about six inches -- it's just too heavy, and I can't do anything but wear it up if I want to get anything done around here! Lance, of course, thinks I should wear it down where it hangs in my face (Yuck!)I think hair is a very emotional thing, and the only reason it doesn't bother me to cut mine is that I usually wait until I am so sick of it I can't stand it!
-- Christine in OK (cljford@mmcable.com), January 16, 2002.
I was inspired by someone on another forum to donate my hair to a charity called Locks of Love. They make wigs for children who have lost their hair due to medical reasons. I only have another couple of inches to go before it's long enough to donate, so I should be getting it chopped off just in time for the summer heat.

Alison I laughed out loud, I never thought of doing that!! May try it myself!

I too have heard that rule of not having long hair after you were forty unless you wear it up. Don't really know who decided that but the problem is once people get over 40 they start not paying attention to some of "those rules" and do more paying attention to what they like :-). I'm over 40 and have long hair because my husband wants it long and I like it long and neither of us care if I would look younger with it short, if that's really true (I do wear it up most of the time though). I find that for me it is easier to take care of than short hair - translation: I don't have to pay someone to cut it every six weeks. Also, when I work outside during the summer I can get ALL of it up off the back of my neck. Oh well, just another area that makes me feel as if I should have lived 100 years ago. LOL!

Iris---are you looking in the mirror yet?????? How are you feeling yet?????? Have you decided you like it yet??????I'm sure you look very nice!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Folks,Just wanted to let you know that I'm getting used to my haircut and I didn't die just because it is shorter. My hubby loved it, but I still plan on letting it grow back again. But, no processing of any kind this time. For once, I want natural hair, long, all one length. I almost had it that way once, then I let my then fiancee talk me into a spiral perm. Boy was that a wrong thing to do. Anyway, thanks for all the support.
-- Iris in Central Oklahoma (WatchingWideEyed@peaceful.com), January 23, 2002.
Locks of Love, is a scam. They pocket most of the profits from selling peoples donated hair. THEY ONLY GIVE A HANDFULL OF THE HAIR TO VICTIMS!If you have nice long hair, don't be stupid, just make a money donation to a reputable charity or person directly. And keep your hair. Money can be earned quickly, hair takes forever to earn back!
-- Kate Loda (Kate@msn.com), August 10, 2002.
I agree, I had donated my hair thinking I was doing good. But now I know people who are jealous were just uing the guilt trip as a excuse to convinve me to cut my hair off.Why don't people with short hair grows thiers and donate it, why must they bother long haired people about it.
And now Locks of Love is crooked, no Duh!
THe word is out, because intenal auditing is showing, allot comes in a little goes out! Crooks!

OMG! I'm 13 and my hair is extremely wavy, think, and frizzy! I don't know what to do with it! I try to tame it, but it seems impossible! Later today I'm getting a haircut and hope that it fixes my problem!
