sick doe (Goats - Health/Treatment)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I'm looking for a bit of advise this morning. We have a Togg doe, 7 months old. Yesterday she developed these symptoms: `Lots of saliva-like foamy, drewl(spelling?) `eyes tearing `mouth hanging open very slightly `she was still eating a bit `Tongue not postioned correctly

A friend of ours had a goat that sounded as though it had the same thing, so I tried it also. This guys is an old farmer from way back, so please don't think I am nuts because it worked for him and his goat, that he thought would be dead in the morning was fine. `an egg `aspirin crushed up `pepto `1/2 shot of whiskey All mixed together and slowly put in w/ a syringe.

Well she is not better this morning and seems quite a bit weaker.

Any of you recognize these symptoms? If I'm not going to the vet, I don't think she has much time. We live in Harwinton and the vet here wouldn't be much help. Anyone have a vet that isn't 60 miles away that knows goats?

Response to sick doe

Sounds like your doe has pnemonia. What is her temp, can you hear her breathing, do her lungs sound raspy when she does breath? There are alot of really good home remedies for things, but they must have some sort of common sense to them. An aspirin will not do anything to bring down fever in a goat, how about something along the lines of 13 plain aspirin for a good size goat? Good in a pinch, but Banamine injected is better, and much eaiser on the goats tummy. The pepto is fine if she has diarrhea or an upset rumen, but really would do no more than buffer the rumen from the aspirin. Now the egg...you got me on that one. Tetracylcine in the form of Oxytet 200, Biomycin etc. all found at feed stores or in jefferslivestock.com or Tylan 200, all the dosages are on saanendoah.com There is also goatworld.com 911 site for you to find someone in your state or area to help you. Along with antibiotics you need to buffer her rumen with yogurt and/or Probios. Take her temp and listen to her breath, Listerosis from the feeding of moldy hay can also cause the tongue to hang out and foamy saliva to pour out, it's because that half of her face is paralysed.
