Will the '02 intercollegiates have an alumni competition?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : orienteer kansas : One Thread

The Chicago o' club is holding an A-meet on the last weekend of April, 2002. It will also be the intercollegiates (and a WRE too actually). At atleast one recent intercollegiates there was an alumni race, wherein alumni of a certain university can compete as a team. I don't know if KU has had a big enough group of people to count in that yet or not. It would be fun if this were the year.

I don't think Chicago is planning an alumni competition. But, it seems like it'd be pretty easy to organize an unofficial (and thus much higher status) alumni event. We'd need to get a few folks involved, come up with a scoring system (what did they use at Quantico when they had the alumni competition) and publicize the event a bit.

What do you think?

If Mook is already showing an interest, KU can have a pretty good representation. Then, there could be an MU team, too (Meenehans Univ.).

The scoring at Quantico last year (the first time this was ever done, as far as I know), was... umm... let's see. I think all alummi qualified, and they had to sign up somewhere for what school they were running for, since the organizers have no idea, and people who went to more than one college (e.g. for grad school) have to pick one. Signup was on a sheet of paper posted on a board in some conspicuous place. Then, for whatever category you ran in, you got a certain number of points if you finished 1st, 2nd, etc. down to 10th (I think). (But I don't remember how many points the various places got.) Top three from each school, for each day, were added together to get a total. I don't remember for sure, but I don't think you could get points on Open categories (i.e. I couldn't run Yellow to bag a lot of points).

Tom Strat organized this last year, so if anybody (Peggy?) knows his email address, somebody could ask him.

JJ's recollection seems pretty close. For more details, feel free to contact Tom Strat at: TStrat@ObjectVideo.com (I'm going along with JJ's assertion that Tom was the organizer; I really don't remember.)

FWIW, I'm currently not planning on attending the ICCs (never been to a CAOC meet, why start now?...) but if the price were right, perhaps I could be persuaded...
