What is the best program to use to change .asf to mepeg-1/2? I tried TMPGEnc but it seems to freeze or something (after 3 hours it did some but not even 1%)For playing on my stand alone dvd player is mpeg1 or mpeg 2 better? Thanks for your help.....I'm new and learning.

www.vcdhelp.com can answer a lot of your questions, but it's been down a lot recently due to having too much traffic. Check out the DVD player compatibility list there before you get started. Many DVD players don't support CD-R media at all, so you'd be wasting your time if your DVD player won't play what you burn anyway. VCD (uses MPEG-1 video) will play on all DVD players that I know of, the only question is whether or not they support CD-R media. SVCD (uses MPEG-2 video) has much less support. There are plenty of DVD players that don't support SVCD at all. SVCD can offer extremely good quality approaching DVD if you know what you are doing and have the right tools. I've seen some very good VCDs, but SVCD is usually better. Just understand that SVCD is a lot less likely to play in any given DVD player. Again, check the DVD player compatibility list to see what your player supports before you get started. If your player won't play SVCD, you should just worry about making VCDs. TMPGenc does generally give very good results encoding to MPEG-1/2. Make sure you have the most recent version as the older the version, the more likely it is to have bugs in it (your problem might be caused by a bug in TMPGenc).

I tried using TMPGEnc to convert asf to mpeg1 as well. Ended up taking 45 hours and at the end the video was perfect but only got the first 5 seconds of audio, then silence. I was unaware previous to this that anything except virtualdub could do the conversion, now am searching with little luck for another proggy to do the job right.
