Ladies, why do you wear make up Men do you

prefer your woman with or without make up?

I don't wear it, and can't but wouldn't anyway. My husband said it was up to me as long as I didn't wear lipstick, light make up would be o.k. but not necessary, So Ladies why do you wear make up?

Seems to me that the make up industry runs many women's lives and laugh all the way to the bank. There's women who will not be seen with out their 'face on'. Some men have never seen their wives without it hard to believe but true. I have a feminist friend who will not wear it, but most do.

Men what do you think about it? and why?

I have no problem with women wearing make up, I would think if you think you need it, then you do; the goats proabilly have no opinion, but the hairdresser might. As for men wearing make up, sure we do; duck hunting, jungle combat, working under cars, ect. I think hair coloring is pretty common among those that meet the public a lot such as; salesmen, enertainment personalities, and those that think they are Gods gift to women.

I tried make-up in jr hi and decided against it. I have heard men say, 'I don't want to have to wash her face to see what she looks like'!

Girls who do not wear make-up are pleasing to my God; and likewise to me. Read 1 Peter 3:3,4 and 1 Timothy 2:9,10.

I wear makeup because I have always had fun trying out new looks and products. I also color my hair since it decided to lose its naturally dark color in a skunk-like streak above my left temple when I was around twenty five. I was a red head for a while which really suited my temperment, but now I am blond, and I've had fun with that. (Particularly with the dumb blonde jokes...because like Dolly Parton, I KNOW I'm not dumb and I'm not really blond either!) I'm not a fanatic about hair and makeup and I look presentable if I just wash my face and brush my hair before I go out. I just figure that if I paint the walls of my house because I like the effect, what's wrong with being a 'painted lady' sometimes, too?

I have friends who do and friends who don't, doesn't bother me either way. Not being graced with movie star looks, I figure if I can improve my appearance with makeup, why not? For everyday, I generally wear a little mascara and a colored lip gloss. For town, I will wear foundation, and subtle eye shadow. On nicer occasions, I will add a little eyeliner, blusher etc, all pretty subtle. I don't like the heavy makeup some wear, reminds me of Halloween. The sad thing is, most of the girls/women I see that really pile it on, have beautiful looks to begin with and I wonder that they can't see their own natural beuaty.

I wear nothing if I'm staying home, some if I'm going to be "seen". A car accident long ago left me with part of one eyebrow, so I fill that in (otherwise I look lop-sided!), and use mascara and blush. I definitely look better with some "definition" - told my kids, "The older the barn, the more paint you need!"

-- Bonnie (chilton@stateline-isp.com), January 06, 2002.

At home, I rarely wear makeup, though I will wear scent-But not if I'm going to be out where there might be bees! Going out I wear a little eyeliner and a bit of mascara-I have very pale lashes, and I look rather ghostly without. Often, I wear a bit of blush, and a little lip gloss. I can and will put on the full war paint If I feel I need-for example, when I went in a few years ago to apply for a house loan or job interviews or those sorts of things. Living out here, though, I rarely feel the need for it. Make-up is way low on my priority list, though chap-stick and hand lotion are fairly high- and sun screen of course!

-- Kelly (homearts2002@yahoo.com), January 06, 2002.

I used to wear make-up when I worked and have nothing against women who feel the need wearing it as long as it is natural looking and not too heavy. I quit wearing it mainly because I don't like putting all those pollutants on my skin. Our skin absorbs what is put on it and if I can't eat it, I don't want it on my skin. Lipstick is made from petroleum. Would you deliberately put petroleum on your skin? I do use a beeswax lip gloss and I use hand lotion which I buy from the health food store. I know, I'm crazy!!!!

-- Barb in Ky. (bjconthefarm@yahoo.com), January 06, 2002.

I think make-up is fine as long as it isn't put on with a spatula! At home I don't wear make-up, but I do when I leave the house. It is a matter of pride that I feel that I look my best. DH likes to feel good about being seen in public with me looking good. I try to put make-up on so I look not made-up.

-- Ardie/WI (ardie54965@hotmail.com), January 06, 2002.

Ardie, you hit the nail on the head, IMHO. To me, the object of wearing makeup is to improve your looks without looking like you're wearing makeup!

-- Lenette (kigervixen@webtv.net), January 06, 2002.

I find women attractive without makeup or as was mentioned, barely enough to be noticable. Skin tone colors too. Blue eye shadow and red lipstick doesn't look attractive to me. Neither do long painted fingernails, especially if they're not real. French tips look nice. I think the natural look is best. I'd rather look at natural less than perfect skin than a futile attempt to hide everything with a thick layer of makeup.

-- Dave (something@somewhere.com), January 06, 2002.

None at home with the family and animals. Lightly when out--even barely noticeable goes a Loooong way with my looks, ha! I never do my nails and am sometimes embarrassed by them when I notice that I didn't quite get all the garden out of them when Im out later. Husband says he could care less (and I love him for this) it's my choice.

Old walls need painting sometimes!

-- Karen (db0421@yahoo.com), January 06, 2002.

Midnight blue mascara (browns/black tend to make me look like a raccoon after a bit), a touch of blush and tinted chapstick. Use an eyelash curler, 'cause w/o it, my eyelashes (like my hair) are poker straight. To me, without this little bit of paint, my face has little definition and my eyes get lost.

-- Judi (ddecaro@snet.net), January 06, 2002.

Since I can't see me from here, I don't bother with make-up most of the time! I've never had anyone complain that the look needed to be covered up, so I don't usually do so. Every once in awhile I decide to doll up and wear make-up, a scent and dress like a girl. Usually people can still recognize me! My husband loves me whether I'm in holey jeans, t-shirt, hay and a bit of mud, or dressed (and made-up) to the nines. Life is good.

-- Sheryl in Me (radams@sacoriver.net), January 06, 2002.

I try to wear at least some (usually mascara and lip balm or gloss or lipstick, depending on my mood) every day. Some days I get up and say "Blah", and put my hair in a bun, brush my hair and teeth, and say if you don't like it, tough!

Some days I get up and put it all on, just because! I wear a foundation with sunscreen in it, and therefore try to wear it pretty regularly, especially if I'm going to be in the sun. I don't like the heavy look either, the point is to look more beautiful, not like "Tammy Faye" used to!

Never wore make-up, never plucked my eyebrows (OUCH)..I cannot say this was due to any esoteric reasoning on my part, I just always thought it to be a waste of time and money..lucky for me, I was blessed with one of those Irish-Scottish complexions which do not need any make-up....It used to make my day when folks swore I was a good 20 years younger than I was, but when those wrinkles landed at 52, well, no hiding all that maturity, eh? LOL...my daughters also do not wear make-up except for a tad of lipstick..they have the loveliest complextions! I truly believe that women who wear ALOT of make up are ruining their faces, not to mention thinning their wallets......I noticed tht my oldest son's wife wears very little make-up and my youngest son's girlfriend wears none at all..these young women ALL are lovely, with nice healthy skin. My boys told me they hate make-up on women, so does my husband..so I guess I am fortunate that we all think alike..would be a heck of an argument otherwise LOL......I don't much notice what other women do, except when they have make-up on so thick it looks ludicrous..most times I think it looks nice, just not for me...

I've heard/read more tahn one lace that sunscreen can be badly effect your liver.

-- Cindy (SE. IN) (atilrthehony@hotmail.com), January 07, 2002.

Lesley, my dh says he never could understand why some women go to all the pain and effort of plucking (all) their eyebrows, then draw them on in a different place, LOL!

-- Lenette (kigervixen@webtv.net), January 07, 2002.

Its soo neat how many people have things to say about make up. believe me , its a girls world. LOL. I do wear mascara and some eye shadow, but its usually only a little darker than my skin color. And vanilla chap stick for me. I used to love experimenting, i never wore a lot of make up, but because i love color, i'd put on darker colors. Way to many HOW TOO magazines, and a lot of extra time on my hands. As painted as we can be, or not be, our insides need to get more care.

My sister and I were just talking about old music and how it takes you back to when you were young. I guess I think about the same thing on make-up! When I was a teenager I used to buy all the glamour books and all the new makeup and loved trying new things. (Ever put egg whites on your face!? It's suppose to be an astringent and it makes it hard to talk till ya wash it off!) :) But I guess now I'm older and alot more comfortable with myself and my lifestyle is so much different. Besides makeup is way too expensive just to wear it every once in awhile! Another added benefit is my skin is so much healthier since I stopped wearing it all the time.

-- Annie (mistletoe6@earthlink.net), January 07, 2002.

I'm an old cosmetologist & then had an image company----did make overs for many years---taught basic skin & hair care & corrective make up & did color analysis---did it for many years---still do alot of charity work & with the youth----& church groups--as that is about all I make time to do---anymore-- but now I do more basic skin & hair care & tell the people what chemical make up can do to your health---I also teach skin care & what to use & how to use it----"Natural" products!! ETC/ETC/

I use to do a lot of platform work & teaching others in my feild how to do---etc-----wore lots of make up & colored my hair---- well when I lost my immune system from the chemicals---- I no longer use any make up & teach others /what it can do to them & how it often effects others around them!! Especially scented products!! And how many, more than people are aware of/ are allergic to chemicals & scented products! As there are thousands of people who are chemical sensitive now. In the 30 plus years/ I have been doing this----- I see the teens I work with now are more health aware than in years before--- & useing more natural make up & a more natural look if they do use make up-----I still teach corrective make up application----but do stress the importantance of good natural skin care etc/etc/etc/-- the use of good ph balanced products for hair & shin & also the use of conditioners on skin & hair!! I see far less teens wearing all the make up /they have in years past/ that is in the area I work in! I also see them wearing far less scented products---it is usually the older womwn who wear all the perfume & prefumed products!!

-- Sonda (sgbruce@birch.net), January 07, 2002.

Very interesting, Sonda. I agree we should be careful not to put chemicals on our skin. I'm old but believe me, I don't wear scents! I don't have the chemical sensitivity you and Cindy do, at least not that extreme, but perfumes do bother me. In my opinion, nothing smells better than clean! Do you have a recommendation for good products to use such as soaps, deodorants, shampoos, lotions? I don't use deodorant much, mostly just when I'm going to church or to the drs. or something like that. I definitely don't wear it every day.

-- Barb in Ky. (bjconthefarm@yahoo.com), January 08, 2002.

Dear Barb---- I don't like to use brand names----but there are many out there that are good- always read on the label to see if they are PH balanced--- our skin & hair & nails are from a 4.5 to a 5.5 on the acid scale & we always want to use products that are more acid than alkline. It is good to always give your hair a vinegar rinse every once in awhile----use to say 1/3 vinegar to 2/3's warm water--- I use to demo on platform (at hair shows) how strong some shampoo's were /that I could wrapp a perm & instead of perm solutation----I would use that shampoo that says/ something about your head & your sholders-----or the shampoo that they use to put a pearl in the bottle-----or that shampoo that they say/ won't make your baby cry---- - they are soooooo strong in alkline----they will do the same job as perm solutation!!!! There are many out there that are that strong & really bad for our hair & scalp!!!!

I have to laugh when people tell me they use certain dandruff shampoos---& most of those shampoos are soooo strong they are causeing the person's really dry scalp that is flakeing----

I worked for redkin company for several years-(amoung many other professional companies)---& "redkin" IS ONLY SOLD IN LIC. SALONS---- I like their products---but there are many others out there that are as good or almost as good that are far less money---I just really have known more about those products from useing them over the years-- -

I don't like to plug any company---- I have found I can use some of oil of olay products that have no scents & are not too harsh for me---- I always wash my face every morning & every night & put on a moisturizer---- I still have an old wrinkled face---- but I think /my gosh how bad it might be if I didn't do that!!!! ha!!! If you have any other questions I would be glad to try to answer them or find the answer for you---- Sonda

I was really blessed with good complexion. I don't remember ever having pimples. Have never used much make-up. Forty years or so ago, I used a little lipstick, now once in a great while I will put some on that is about the same color as my lips. Also once in a blue moon I may use a little Mary Kay powder blush (I guess that tells you that it is about 20 yrs old, since they don't make it anymore). Our daughter recently became Mary Kay dealer, mostly so she could get her make-up at better price. She gave me the set of cleanser, day and night solution and moistureizer--which I forget to use more than not. I have never used soap on my face, just wet washcloth. Have never colored my hair. At age almost 66, I still have mostly dark hair, just a little white at temples. Sometimes use perfume if I remember. I just never got into make-up because before I was married, there wasn't the money for it. After we married, husband said he didn't care much for make-up or especially hair coloring. I think if applied correctly, make-up is fine. I DO love the scented shower and bath products!

-- gibson girl (bobtravus@email.com), January 08, 2002.

I wear makeup on occassion when I just need a change or am going out. I do die my hair though. I feel to young to go gray just yet and like my hair a little lighter than normal. It is costly though.
