I hope everyone is hanging in there with the snow in Georgia, and other parts of the south. On the news it looks really bad. I live in a ski resort town so we have snow 9 months out of the year, and we are prepared for snow. I pray that our A.M.E family in the south is fine. God bless you.

Answers

I don't know about the rest of the south but in Atlanta the snow is wonderful. It snowed all day yesterday, all night last night, and much of the day today. Usually we get a lot of ice mixed in. Since we are at the base of the mountains with lots of hills it can be very dangerous. It usually brings us to a complete standstill. However this time it appears to be all snow.

It is a lovely sight and a virtual winter wonderland. I have been out driving every place I needed to go. I did not notice that anyone else had a problem either, as I saw lots of cars and lots of people every place I went. Perhaps tomorrow as it melts and refreeze it will be a different story but we have District Conference tomorrow and Saturday and I plan to attend.

We love the snow here and I even went out and fed the birds I saw searching for food. We are praying for more. Especially the children who must return to school next week because schools are usually closed for snow due to the danger of bus transport on ice.

Thank God for the beauty of snow--a true wonder of creation.

Robert I knew you were a Montanan stuck in Atlanta. I too love snow. And winter is my favorite season! Right now we have about 18 inches of snow on the groung. And it snowed all day on thursday. The only time schools close in Montana is when it is -45 below zero (an no that is not a typo) The school buses will not go our if it -20 below because their gas lines freeze. The parents have to drive the kids to school themselves. So Robert when are you moving to Montana? (heehee)

This morning I awakened to a sight unseen in many years - frost!

Yes, the great southern Metropolis is glazed in a way reflective of more northern climes. Frost! This is not why I left New England.

Fortunately, we have not seen snow in southern Houston since Feb. 15, 1994. I understand the northern outskirts may have been dusted a few days ago.

People probably smirked at me when I was wearing a winter coat last week. I gawked in amazement at my son's teammates who went to morning practice in just their swim suits and a T-shirt. Two of the three now have the flu.

This has certainly been a cooler year.

I was not dreaming of a white Christmas, Kwanzaa or New Year's in Atlanta. It was dreaming of a green Christmas or something like that. The snow in Atlanta is indeed pretty and everything but I very much dislike snow. Driving around the Perimeter and on surface streets are horrendous. I had to drive to work in the snow on Wednesday, drive back home from work Wednesday night (it took me exactly one hour for a trip that usually takes me 25 minutes), stay in most of the day Thursday and all night Thursday night (I had to resort to watching Miami beat up on Nebraska. It was no game, it was murder . . . ) I'm going to the Caribbean as soon as possible.

Myron I am so glad you made it home safely! You mentioned the Carribean, don't forget we have A.M.E churches in Bermuda and Jamica. If only we could come up with a conference idea so you could go. As I have said previously we are getting a lot of snow also. Which is great for our towns economy since our town is a ski resort town. It generates money for business. So usually in the winter we are praying for snow! Hang in there it will improve. And I hope that everyone says a prayer for protection when they get in the car.

As I stated in another post, I am really not that old but this board keeps me going down memory lane. So now I am remembering one of my favorite poems, "Stopping By Woods On a Snowy Eve" by Robert Frost.

Myron, I am sorry you are uncomfortable but I dearly love the snow. Actually the temperature is not that cold. Today it's in the low 40s and has been hovering between 33 and 26 degrees instead of the teens or single digit figures we should have in January. That is perhaps why we got snow instead of freezing rain or ice. The radiation and insulation which snow provides also makes it feel quite warm.

Reverend Rogers, I do love the winter. In fact it's my favorite time of the year. Unlike many people I spend my summers looking for a place to escape the heat. So I have found myself in August visiting England where you need air doing the day but a sweater at night; or Cape Breton Highlands, Nova Scotia, which is above the tree line and a little fire is quite comfortable at night. By the same token I found France, Prince Edward Island, Ontario, Michigan and New York to be much too hot. Bermuda also was hot but because it is 600 miles mid- ocean and closer to New York than to Atlanta the ocean makes it bearable for most of the year. Mexico City is also comfortable because of its extremely high elevation, but this also makes it difficult to breathe for persons who come from areas of lower altitude. So on second thought Montana might prove to be a challenge to me because of its elevation even though the cold would not bother me. I do not, however, desire to be in the Bahamas or even the Georgia Coast during the summer.

Jerryl, I have found frost to be and indication that you have had a pretty cold night but also when the sun burns it off, later the same day, it feels quite warm.

To piggyback on the song to which Myron referred to and one I quoted in another sting.

I'm dreaming...............

Perhaps this year I won't have to dream or long to be up north. Hopefully, we will have a cold and white winter in (LA) Lovely Atlanta.

I was shocked to see Atlanta, Montgomery and even parts of northern Florida dusted with snow. I live in the Chicago area, and I am glad that my friends in the south are experiencing a change of seasons. Cold weather helps you stay focused! Being a southerner who just moved from the south to the north, I am excited to see my friends enter into my world! Enjoy and embrace the "Hawk" and the famous "Canadian Clipper." ENJOY!!!!!!

Robert you are correct the elevation in my town is high. We are in the mountains 5000 feet above sea level. It usually takes people only a day to adjust to the altitude. Persons who have a heart condition should consult their doctors. Now when I go to sea level, it takes my body a day or two to adjust also. I do encourage everyone to come and visit Montana. It is an absolutely gorgeous state. Yellowstone National Park alone is worth the trip! We have low humidity in the summer so, the weather is wonderful. We also have glacier national park in the north. The best trout fishing in the world is in Montana. Then there are rodeo's, fabulous rivers etc. So winter of summer, my state is great to visit. But to those living in the south, take care and have your tires checked. Oh, and come visit Montana.
