Traditional Cooking/Canning Book Recommendations

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

I wanted to share with everyone two FABULOUS books I got for Christmas from my husband. NOURISHING TRADITIONS by Sally Fallon is an entire nutritional discussion first, about how we are making ourselves sick with high cholesterol, etc., by the "non fat healthy" foods that are pushed on us in society. It challenges politically correct nutrition, and has techniques and recipes to help maximize your bodies health (for example, using whey to slightly ferment a food for a couple of days before eating/cooking, which can also be put away for months).

KEEPING FOOD FRESH by the Gardeners & Farmers of Terre Vivante is full of Old World Techniques and Recipes that make preserving food much, much easier and much more healthful for you. It uses lacto-fermentation as well, doesn't believe in "sterilizing" everything or in cooking it all a lot, and uses salt, etc., in the canning process.

Check these books out! You might save yourself a lot of time and energy, AND get healthier at the same time!

If you like Sally Fallon's book, then you might look at the following related websites:

http://www.WestonAPrice.org

There is also a Nourishing Traditions forum that can be accessed from one of these websites. Can't remember which.

Marcee, I've had my eye on the Sally Fallon book for over a year, but haven't wanted to pay full price for it. But I NEVER see it used for a cheap price so I know it's a great book! :) Guess I'll just have to spring for the new price.
