Error Message when converting AVI to MPEG in TMPGenc ***URGENT

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

hi everyone,

I have a few avi files that i want to convert to MPEG-1. I am using the latest version of TMPGEnc, and when I select the files as input sources, it give the following error message:\

File "movie.avi" can not open, or unsupported.

I remember that the site www.vcdhelp.com had a solution to this, by sownloading some kind of codec package (or something like that). I remember that it had the name "crystal" in it.

Does anybody know where I can get my hands on this since the VCDHelp site is down now?????

Thanks a lot

You first have to find a way of knowing exactly what AVI codec those files were captured, and now need to display with. Then you get this codec and install/register it with Windows. In TMPGenc you uninstall VFAPI then re-install it. These are the basic steps. There is NO such thing as "I have an AVI file." Those who would like to have anything to do with AVI files SHOULD ALWAYS be aware exactly what h/w and/or s/w VfW or DirectShow codec was used to create, and now need to play back with, that file. There are hundreds of AVI codecs of all persuasions strewn around. Few things are as frustrating as being given an AVI file captured with some obscure AVI h/w codec that one cannot now display, let alone port to such things as TMPGenc. When you install Win98, for example, it installs a few AVI codecs along with it, details of which can be found in Control Panel>Multimedia>devices>video compression device.

I have tmpGen and I am planning on encoding the futurama divx files in avi format to mpeg format so I can archive them onto VCD format (played back through my dvd/svcd player). I've tried encoding a regular 20 minute avi episode to mpeg format and left it overnight to finish up .. when I woke up it was still going .... only halfway done - as a person with no more patience i aborted the job. My question is, I have a Pentium II 300 and it says it'll take 20 or so odd hours to complete the encoding process ... is there a way to accelerate the process to 10 or less hours, if not a couple hours? (Either make it encode faster or I'll just download the files in mpeg format and avoid the additional job of encoding avi files to mpeg format) thanks for your help... I Just cant wait 500 hours to encode all 20 futurama episodes!

If u still want to use TMPgenc perhaps it's time for u to go up the update ladder with an i850 chipset-based motherboard, a Pentium 4 2.2GHz, and 512 of RDRAM. Expensive, but it will definitely encode your lot in less than 10 hours.

The solution is very simple. The file was encoded by a codec not suported by windows, and it is a real problem to fix it, so change your file with this tool. It really works!!!

tool: divx2mp4 It's only 15 kb. mail me for a copy or try to download it.

Hi everyone

I have the same problem. Received an avi file which I want to convert to .mpg using TMPGEnc, but I get error opening the file with TMPGEnc. I can however open the file using Microsoft Media Player and watch the avi as well as open the file in Virtual Dub, but it does not work for me with TMPGEnc. I doubt that I don't have the correct Codec installed otherwise my file would not have played in the first place.

Are there any other tool out there that I can maybe use to create the avi again using a diffirent Codec and then move on to TMPGEnc?

Thanks

hey jacques, try going to "Options" then to "Enviromental Settings" then to "Vfapi Plugins" and raise the "Direct Show" to "2"...

that did it for me. good luck.

Yes I had this annoying problem when using Premiere and the MS DV codec! However 'subcomandante ' had the answer. Move Direct Show up the list.

Brilliant!

I have a digital camera that also takes video. The output is an avi file with not codecs. The video would not open until "Directshow.." was at the top of the list.

Thanks subcomandante!

to get tmpgenc to work properly you need to follow these simple instructions:

1. Select "Options -> Environmental Setting ..." 2. Select the "VFAPI-Plugin" tab 3. Right click on the "Directshow Multimedia File Reader" option 4. Select the "Higher Priority" option 5. Repeat previous two steps until priority is set to 2

The "Directshow Multimedia File Reader" should now be at the top.

install nemo lite and divx pro 3.5 bundle http://nimo.titanesk.com/modules/mydownloads/viewcat.php?cid=5 http://avicodec.duby.info/
