Using “Embarcadero Center” + history in google will net you a lot of reference sites, including some about the ships that were dug up during the construction. The center itself is wonderful to wander through, beautifully designed and full of really good shops and restaurants.

The center was built on what were sites of warehouses, marine and industrial buildings. Some of the survivors, lovely brick buildings, can be seen in Jackson Square. The sad part was that the sites were bought up for just about nothing in the late 60s. By 1971 (when the first center building opened) land values had skyrocketed. Bet a lot of people wished they’d held out for ground leases (a few families in San Francisco are still living off the ground lease income from Maiden Lane ….). But that’s the way business goes.
