are there what we call "Hoar" frosts in Missouri?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
Good Morning All, It's a beautiful, crisp winter day up here in Northeastern Minnesota and I just took a walk in the woods. The sun is shining for the first time in what seems like weeks. There is what we call a "Hoar" (sp?) frost on everything and it is just gorgeous. I was just wondering if you get them in Missouri cause we are thinking of re-locating there in the near future. I love the winters here, they are just beautiful, but they last way too long. Summers are way too short and it's hard to garden, or should I say challenging. Anyway, just wondered about the Hoar frost. Thanks for listening and have a great day. Deb

We have them here in Oklahoma, so I betcha that they do up a little ways in Missouri. I live only about 20 minutes or so from the Missouri border. Our growing season is over 200 days.

Yep, we get em here too, and I'm just north of the Arkansas border.

I was waiting for someone else to answer your question, but I will try.....I have always been told that it is when the frost is thick on top of everything and it sparkles like glitter. Like someone painted that white flocking over everything and it shimmers when the sun comes up. Beautiful on the grass and trees. It is frozen and you can see that it is white when you run your finger over it and collect a bit. Like those old pictures of Jack Frost in the children's books. Isn't that what it is guys?

We get frost on everything here EXCEPT the hoars.
