I have a mpg file with mpeg2 compression. It's to big, so I want to convert it to mpeg1. I have used Ulead Mulitmedia pro, vcdgear with the same results, the video comes out good, nut the audio is out of sync! Is it the programs, or is it the mpg's that I'm using? Plus when I converted the cue/bin files in vcd gear, I didn't remove the cd-i buffer, does that effect the mpg? It plays fine.

I can't say anything about the quality of the Ulead product or vcdgear as I've never used them, but it's not normal to have a/v sync problems when doing this type of conversion. A lot of things can be to blame, including the source, and it's impossible to know what's to blame. Just in case you used it, I will warn you that TMPGenc has problems sometimes with a/v sync if you use it to mux. The MPEG2VCR product from Womble (www.womble.com) has a reall good tool under their muxer where you can move audio forwards or backwards during the mux. It can fix most a/v sync problems. The full blown MPEG-1/2 version is $249 US, but I think you can get a MPEG-1 version for $50. You don't say what your source is, but if it's SVCD, I'd start looking there. A lot of home recorded SVCDs have minor compliance problems and this could lead to a noticable problem when converting to MPEG-1, but again, this is just a guess. With regards to the cd-i stuff, you don't need it. It's only there for compatibility with old style cd-i drives.
