Hello All, I just got a position teaching at Michigan State in East Lansing. Although I got plenty of information on East Lansing I would love to know if there are possibilities of homesteading within driving distance. Any information regarding the area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks All! Mike

Mike, It sure would help if we knew how long you wanted to drive. Lansing is on a "corridor" that is highly developed, but if you get to either side of the corridor there are lots of possibilities. We are a little over one hour south of Lansing and this is homestead heaven.

Mike, About 18 miles east of the U. straight out Grand river Ave.around Webberville,Fowlerville there is still opportunity but closing in fast. Another area is a little farther and that is Cohoctah,Byron & Gaines area.

I grew up in Eaton Rapids, south of Lansing. Prices of land has been going up and up. Williamston is a nice town, with lots of horse country but land will be pricy. Perry , Laingsburgh, or Bath are still kind of rural. Also a straight shot to the University. I would stay on the north west side of MSU. I lived in E Lansing for three years and you'll enjoy it. Although, I went to Central Michigan University, MSU is a great university and a fun place to be. What will you be teaching?

Mike:I live on the outskirts of East Lansing (in Bath Twp.) and work at MSU. There are still some rural areas, but these are developing quickly. I've lived in this area for 13.5 years and have seen it develop. I'd be more inclined to move eastward toward Owosso, Durand, Perry areas. It takes me approximately 20 - 25 minutes when traffic is light. Durand is the furthest east and would be about 45 minutes to an hour drive. I-69 tends to have a lot of winter-time accidents and traffic is rerouted frequently.
