IQ

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

Do you know your IQ? I am reading a book that discusses this. It said they asked 10,000 people what their IQ was and almost ALL of them said theirs was above 100. Now the book said that the average score is 100, so half of people's scores will be above 100 and the other half below 100. I thought this was somewhat ironic. No one wants to be average!!!

Here are the point ranges and percentages:

Below 70 about 3%

70-90 about 22%

90-100 about 25%

100-110 about 25%

110-130 about 23%

above 130 about 2%

Just in case you wondered. If you know yours you can tell where you fit in. Normal is from 90 to 110, gifted above 130. I have had mine tested but I'm not saying!!

Does anyone know any on-line sites if people just want to play around and find out their IQ??? I think it would be interesting at least. although I don't think that the number is the best indicator for success in life...

Melissa: Without a doublt yours must be at least 130 and above....Radar

I think it was on ivillage about two months ago that I saw an I.Q. test; only a short one, I don't know how accurate you can be with less than 100 questions, but it was kind of interesting. My mother used to tell me that my brother was a genius according to the tests. (Of course, I didn't believe her!) I know about what mine is (they tested it when I was in High School), and like you, I don't think it wise to share with others: either they will think you are bragging, or wonder if you are silly enough to think that is a good number!

Agreed Christine, I never meant for anyone to post their IQ unless they want to... I just thought people might like to know where they fit in the scheme of the numbers. I am reading a good book that talks about the relationshio between IQ and learning. I will be posting more on this topic later on. Really the majority of people should fall in the average category, but I have a feeling we have a lot of smart people here!!!

OK it is past 11:00pm and I am still up. Having fun for sure, I fould a test site that is kind of silly and kind of fun. I have been taking IQ test for an hour now! It is called: www.allthetests.com

You might try it just for fun, Mitch you will probably like this one, lots of logical thinking. One of them I just completely guessed and still scored a 100, one of them I had a perfect score on, and two of them I had an IQ of 155, 151 and another was 135. So I am all over the board on these things!!!! It has been interesting at least!!

Doesn't matter when you're dyslexic.

But of the 10,000 people they polled, did they include the people under bridges, in county jails, state hospitals and group homes? These are the folks who bring that average way down. How about the ones whose measurable IQ is so low they are unable to answer the question?

Sorry, I am left handed......

My ex mil, a school teacher, said you can raise your IQ by ding word games. Mine is up from grade school. Question: does IQ raise from maturing, from reading and keeping intrested in life, from doing? Is IQ our ability to learn-how fast we can learn something?

I think it reamins pretty consistent within a few points. The tests are normally geared to the age group and what they would be expected to do, for example they don't give 5 year olds the same test they give 12 year olds. But the testers have developed the scores over time while testing a wide variety of people.

I don't know who they asked, I don't think any of the people knew their real score, they just asked what they thought their score would be.

There is a section of the book that discusses underachievers, people with high IQ's but that don't have the discipline necessary to use their intelligence in the best way for them. Many of these people have IQ's above 130, but don't have any discipline. Both traits must work hand in hand. Many of the "homeless-bridge people" may have a higher IQ than you may suspect.

As to dyslexics, my brother is dyslexic, but there are tests that can be used specifically for this group. His IQ tested much higher than anyone thougt it would, helping to reveal that his problem was dyslexia. The test is just one tool of many that educators can use to help a child learn the best way that they can.

Last night when I was taking those tests, the ones I really messed up on had bars and circles filled with different colors and you had to figure out the next pattern. All those colors made my head spin, NOT for me!!

But the ones with number patterns, and letter patterns, and logic questions, I loved those. While a person may have gifts in one area, they do not necessarily translate to another. So I don't take them too seriously. Just thought some of you may enjoy playing around with the test, kind of like MItch's stumpers.

I've taken a few of those tests now, I have a little trouble with the one that used your for you're. I have quite a range there, perhaps because I took one during the night when I couldn't sleep and also the dyslexia. Do you know of any test for dyslexic? I am rather pleased with the results tough.

Hi Cindy, that is the only site I visited, so I don't know any specific testing sites for dyslexic people. I know they exist somewhere, I just don't know where!!!

-- Melissa (me@home.net), November 26, 2001.

Melissa, I just went to allthetests.com and took a few of the tests. It was a pleasant surprise to find out I'm not as braindead as I feel most of the time! (if they are at all accurate) Thanks! That made my day!

-- Deena in GA (dsmj55@aol.com), November 26, 2001.

I'm afraid to find out my score. ;-)

Laura: Yeah for lefties!

-- Randal (randal@rhyme.cjb.net), November 27, 2001.

The lefties outnumber us righties here at my house by a score of 4 to 2! Only Kadia and I are right-handed and the rest left-handed. They seem to have no difficulties with it, but teaching them to use scissors when they were little was interesting, nad I still don't know how on earth they hold their hands like they do and cut anything!

-- Melissa (me@home.net), November 27, 2001.

They say lefties compose 10% of the population. In our house, we also are majority: Joel, Leila and I, three out of five. Unusual, I would think. To use the scissors, a left has to apply not only downward pressure, but sideways as well to make the blades work properly. Tiring task. And I used to think I was such a weakling at unscrewing caps and tops of jars, not to mention nuts and bolts. Part of that I can blame on bad torque for a lefty.

-- Randal (randal@rhyme.cjb.net), November 27, 2001.

I don't know where you get them, but there are scissors for Lefties. My Leftie niece has all kinds, even barber scissors.

My curiosity got a hold of me today, while I was sitting at my PC bored at work today. I found a site that provided a free IQ test, and I took it. The test results came back, and surprised the $hit out of me. The score was a 151. So, being the pessimist that I am, I believed the test to be inaccurate, So, I took the time to find another site that provided a free IQ test, I took that test also, when the results came back.... again, I was shocked. The score was a 149. I'm not sure if its correct or not. But for someone who didn't go to college, the web says that I'm smarter than a lot of individuals out there. To be accurate, it says that, I'm part of .677% of the population. Which leads me to my dilemma...Even though the Web may say, I'm at the top of the class, it sure is lonely up here... :(
