Taliban Chief Appoints Deputy, Goes Into Hiding
CHAMAN, Pakistan (Reuters) - Mullah Mohammad Omar, spiritual leader of Afghanistan's hardline Taliban, has moved into hiding, and appointed his deputy to run the affairs of embattled militia, a Taliban official said on Friday.
``Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Usmani has been appointed the deputy of Mullah Omar,'' Mullah Sayed Mohammad Haqqani, Taliban security official in charge at the border town of Spin Boldak near Pakistan, told Reuters.
He said the decision was taken after a meeting of the top leadership of the Taliban on Thursday in southern Kandahar, home of reclusive Taliban leader.
``Mullah Omar has shifted to an unknown place for security reasons,'' Haqqani said.

Mullah Omar was last seen jogging away in the distance, making the noise of a steam train and occasionally pulling an imaginary whistle, hooting, "woo-wooo."
