Goat in heat & when to breed?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
I have a Nubian doe that I bought last summer. Very nice & all disease tested, but not very tame. I am pretty sure she is in heat tonight (lots of calling, tail up, acting aggitated). She came with a free breeding to my choice of the breeders 2 Nubian bucks. Can anyone tell me exactly when in their cycle should they be bred for the best conception rate? I can probably arrange to leave the doe there a few days. Also, is breeding this time of year recommened? I am in Colorado so we do get weather issues. Thanks!

If you want mark this day on the calendar and arrange to drop her off in oh 19 - 20 days. They are suppossed to come into heat every 21 days. That would have it born in may. I'm not fimular with your weather. Add five months minus three days to the breeding dte for the due date. Good luck.

If she is in heat right now, morning could be to long. A doe stays in standing heat just a few hours, 12 at the most, though displays sometimes for longer. Older does may let the bucks breed them much longer than this. How old is your doe? When do you want kids next year? If you bred today you would be getting kids April, December is May kids and January is June kids, anything after January and you will be lucky to have a good strong heat, in anything other than an older doe. Like the previous answer, contact the breeder tell them she is in heat now, and you would like to bring her over in about 19 days, does the free breeding come with boarding? Vicki

Thanks for the info. She started "acting weird" last night & is still hollering a bit today, but not nearly as much. I knew the gestation length, but was not sure how long their actual heat cycle lasts. I am guessing she is on her way out of season now. I am going to try for the next heat cycle as that would be a better time for the kids to be born anyway. My doe is 3 yrs old.
