Wheat berries or ball bearings ?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
My wife and i just had our first bowl of wheat berries. We soaked them for twenty four hours and boiled them for a half hour. My wife said she would rather eat grass. We put honey and a little milk on them but you could hardly chew the little rubbery boogers. What did we do wrong ? Jim in Ohio

It sounds like you didn't cook them long enough. I eat curried wheat berries at my local deli and they are sooooo good.

Cook them until quite a few of them split open a little..or until you can mush one between your index and forefinger. I like mine with half rice half wheat berries. I put butter and lemon juice on it. Must get some soon!

Jim, they just need to be cooked longer. I love them in my veggie beef soup. Never ate them with honey and milk but must try that.

Wheat has to cook for a full hour at least. I like to stir a raw egg into a bowlful of steaming hot wheat berries, maybe a little garlic powder. Throw a handful into long-cooking winter stews or beans.
