I read an article today on the slowly increasing trend of people moving to the rural areas. Big surprise for some of y'all, huh. http://www.csmonitor.com/2001/1107/p11s1-lihc.html It's a really interesting one, it even has some good advice for those thinking of moving to the boonies.

Good article, especially the part about the under 30,000.00 house in Maine. My question is it said no bathroom but didn't mention anything about an outhouse hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

My dream is to get back to upstate NY and start living my dream again. Sally

Very good article. I think another important concern is how far you are from airports if you travel to visit family often, or if they travel to visit you. It is no fun to have a 3 or 5 hour drive to the nearest airport with decent fares. And then add the fact you have to be there at least 2 hours early for your flight...

One thing we just found out is problems with health care. We are going to buy land and we were going to put a mobile on it for my husbands parents and found out they couldnt use there kaiser! there is a kaiser 30 miles away but but kaiser wont cover them.Shame on you kaiser.Guess alot of folks want to move to the hills and retire but cant because of kaiser.

It is not just Kaiser, it is actually the deal your employer strikes with Kaiser and other healthcare providers. Same if you are a state employee, you are pretty much stuck as to where you can retire. Everybody thinks all Kaisers are alike and one big happy family but they are all individual entities, even within the same state. Go figure.

On that note...has anyone heard if Maine passed the resolution to adopt socialized medicine?

What is Kaisers? Health care program?

Socialized medicine in the good old US of A ??? Haven't heard about that yet !! Can't see the insurance companies and the doctors allowing that to happen. But let me know if this is true...would love to hear more on this topic !! Let me know !!

Kaiser is a self-contained (their own doctors and specialists) HMO. A lot of people like them because there are no forms to fill out like a regular health insurance. Just a co-pay, no deductibles. They are not in rural areas, so that is why if that is your contracted healthcare provider, you may be stuck living in an area you don't particularly like.
