I'm back...and wht I learned

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Country Families : One Thread

You probably didn't even know I was gone for 10 whole days. That's the longest I've been away from a homestead forum since Nov. 8, 1999. We're moved into our very unfinished house, we're re-building and finishing an addition to a very old and delapidated house-Green Acres type. It will be quite a while before we can unpack. Hope by next weekend we'll be able to install the new kitchen cabinets. Yes a sink, the hardest part is not having a sink of any kind-probably not bad if you're used to it-like an elderly friend reminded me that that's how she grew up. You can wash onions and potatoes in the shower, but I don't like the water running down my arm. We do have dishpans We do have hot water, but it's hard to get to, hooking up the washer to the cold water with a hose isn't too bad...well as long as you don't trip over the hose and the inside cats stay in and the outside cats stay out. Haven't used the stove for two weeks, but we have alternatives.

Actually there's one thing harder than not having a sink, that's having to give up al but three of my older hens. We do have 63 chicks in the everything room. We'll be able to finish the chicken house this week, so they can move out. The meat birds are getting too big for the metal tub they're in.

But this pace is certainly a blessing and worth all the extra work.

CIndy, as a matter of fact, I did miss you!!! Glad you are back with us and back on line. I was getting ready to send Melinda an email and ask about you! I know what you mean about not having a sink. I didn't have one for over 4 months when we moved into our very unfinished house! I had to get water from the cistern with a bucket, we didn't even have a shower at that point! I washed dishes in a dish pan although I must admit, I used as many paper plates as I could. It was worth it in the long run though so hang in there. Eventually your house will be finished and you will be so proud of what you and Gary did! God bless.

Sounds like a mansion , you mean people have running water hot and cold inside ?????? You must be rich ! And unpacking you mean your not suppose to just live out of those boxes ? Well I guess my house has been unfinished for way to long ! All kidding aside enjoy your new place.

Welcome back Cindy!! I did notice you were gone and glad to see you posting again. Just pretend like you're camping and it will seem like you have a lot of luxuries. Keep us posted on the progress, it will be interesting I'm sure!!!

Patty, sounds like you should have some kind of an award for all your efforts for so long. And Barb 4 months without a sink, that's not easy. I'm used to the dishpans now for dishes, but I still don't like brushing my teeth in the shower, although I know even really rich people do that, I used to clean their houses for a living:~}. I really lik seeing this place get done a little at a time, I like hearing the chickies peeping, but it's time for them to move to bigger quarters. Melinda, I'll talk to you later.

Mom, instead of brushing in the shower try using a little bottled water. You have a little less of a water bill that way and I know you use bottled water.
