Have I got Orf??? (Soremouth - Sheep)greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
Some of my sheep have recently had orf and are now nearly recovered but are still undergoing treatment. Someone else has been tending them the past week as I have been away. However, during this time I have developed what look like blisters on two of my fingers. However they are hard with no apparant fluid inside. Although sore they are not especially painful. I always thought orf was found more widespread over the body but never having had it before or knowing anyone who has and being unable to find much info on the net. If I do have orf do I present a threat to other people or unaffected sheep. Any info will be gratefuly received. Thanks in advance

Richard I had soremouth under my fingernail. Why I didn't spread it to my mouth I have no idea since I did chew on it some, actually thought it was an ant bite at first. It also was hard, sore mostly because I messed with it so much, but no fluid. It did burst and crust over, which was when I knew what it was. Went to the doctor and he gave me a triple antibiotic to use :) secondary infection is all you have to worry about. Yes it is contagious, don't be changing any baby diapers or making sandwiches for the kids, wash dishes with gloves on, and don't pick your nose :) I would quickly become left handed if this is on your right hand when visiting the restroom. After our first initial problems with soremouth we have never gotten it again, even though we have new stock. I also made it a point when we got soremouth to give it to everyone in the herd. Vicki
