Laughter lights up our lives The Herald-Sun Nov 1, 2001 : 8:50 pm ETDURHAM -- The terrorist attacks may have shocked our economy and shaken our sense of security, but they haven’t affected our sense of humor.
You may have seen the photos, distributed on email, of Osama bin Laden riding a flying carpet with an American F-16 in hot pursuit. It’s neat what a creative person with some spare time, a Photoshop program and a boatload of patriotism can do to buoy the national spirits.
Some of the jokes even get adjusted for local consumption. Buzz understands this e-mail, which got passed around Duke’s system, was initially told by a late night comic:
"Football practice was delayed on Wednesday for nearly two hours at Wallace Wade Stadium for the Blue Devils.
One of the players, while on his way to the locker room, happened to look down and notice a suspicious-looking, unknown white powdery substance on the practice field.
"Carl Franks immediately suspended practice while the FBI was called in to investigate. After a complete field analysis, the FBI determined that the white substance unknown to the players was the goal line.
"Practice was resumed when the FBI decided that the team would not be likely to encounter the substance again."
The joke was initially told with the Washington Redskins as the butt.
But for the never-say-win Devils football squad, it works out even better.
