N.Y. Hospital Worker Dies From Anthrax

POSTED: 9:00 a.m. EST October 31, 2001

UPDATED: 9:23 a.m. EST October 31, 2001

The 61-year-old New York hospital worker hospitalized earlier this month died today from inhalation anthrax, according to the hospital where she was being treated. It's the country's fourth anthrax fatality in a month of bioterrorism. Authorities haven't determined how the woman came in contact with the anthrax.

Lenox Hill Hospital said the 61-year-old woman -- Kathy Nguyen -- died this morning, three days after checking herself in. She'd been too sick to help investigators trying to find the source of her infection. Earlier, officials said that the source of the recent anthrax cases is proving to be a "moving target" for investigators.

That's an assessment from Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institutes of Health. Fauci said that the two anthrax cases involving patients who do not work for the U.S. Postal Service, government or the media are becoming "more perplexing."

One patient is a New Jersey woman who lives in a town where a post office tested positive for anthrax. She has the skin form of the disease. The other is the 61-year-old New York woman with inhalation anthrax who has now died. That woman worked in a hospital stockroom that sometimes handles mail. But officials said environmental tests of the facility are turning up negative.

Fauci said that the inhalation case is causing increasing concern among investigators, who fear the spores could be spreading from one piece of mail to another.

Hi guys, popped in for a quickie... you know, this woman, and the lawyer kind of tickled a theory that's been forming in the back of my head as to the perp in this anthrax mess... here's my logic, see what you think.

1. Handwritting analysis profiles angry male, probably in 70's, due to stylized printing of the number 1 which was taught decades ago to US children, probably Republican, ar anti-democrat, right wing, trying to frame the anthrax attacks on muslim terrorist...

2. US bioweapons program ends 1969 - right time frame for above individual to have been part of program.

3. Vietnam war 1960's-1974, again, someone now in 70's right time frame to have been involved.

4. Kathy Nguyen, 61, Vietnamese immigrant, lived alone, no contact to mail. home in Bronx, clean so far from test. Inhalation form.

5. Another woman, 51, accountant, skin form, again no awareness of any suspicious mail, or how she could have come in contact. Skin form.

My theory is that they should be looking for a 70 year old male, possibly a Vietnam Vet, ex-husband, boyfriend of Nguyen. May have had recent financial problems, or in home visit from the accountant exposed. One or both of the exposures could have been accidental, or deliberate. Profile suggest someone with repressed anger... Vietnam Vet, jilted by Vietnamese spouse/girlfriend, money problems...

I think they should be looking real closely at the male associates of the above 2 women, looking for someone in their 70's, Vietnam vet, possible link through military or research part of old US bioweapons program, with access to processed anthrax, or techniques to develop themselves. (Silcate used to treat particles same/similar to that used in US bioweapons anthrax). Lives in Jersey neighborhood where carriers were infected picking up mail from mailboxes. Probably has friends/family in Florida and Atlanta that he visits frequently, and used those trips to postmark some of the letters to give the illusion of a network of terrorists...

What do you think?

I think much of what you say makes a lot of sense, Carl. I'm not so sure the age is right, because I think secret biowarfare work went on after '69. Maybe look for an ex-medic who later worked or still does work in a hospital, perhaps as a lab worker of some sort.

"He said that he had recently had a conversation with William Patrick, a retired U.S. Army biological weapons expert who helped make anthrax into a weapon in the 1960s. Patrick told him that the United States used silica by itself to help aerosolize the bacteria that cause tularemia, or rabbit fever -- one of several diseases that the United States sought to "weaponize" until the U.S. program was halted in 1969, Spertzel said."

No, in 1969, if he is 70 now, would have been 38 years old, probably similar in age to the retired Army expert quoted above. Bio-chem warfare research was carried out under the same umbrella, I think. Remember Agent Orange in Vietnam? I'm sure some researchers spent time in Vietnam checking out the live "field" tests... plus any other nasties we may have played with in the early '60's that would still be classified and buried under lock and key...

I guess what I'm vaguely thinking about is the Pine Bluff arsenal, where a lot of that crap was stored. I lived in Arkansas, not too far from there (as mebs does now), so it could have been someone who worked at the facility and had access to the materials. That could also partly explain the East Coast emphasis. Extreme right-wing southerners don't pay much 'tention to the Left Coast!

Southern redneck's have a saying "Nothin' but steers and queers come from California... and boy, don' see no horns on your hayed.."

Course I'd point out I was born in Little Rock, and related to half of Arkansas, but that's another story.

Many vets fought to bring back Vietnamese girlfriends/wives when they came home. Whether the fixation was due to the charms of Vietnamese women, or that they were the only bright spot in the ugliness that was Vietnam, dunno, but know many vets that got bit by the bug. The fact that neither her work or home have shown any contamination so far is what makes me suspect she could have been exposed possible at the home of the person behind this, if it is one person.

Ditto with the Jersey accountant.

A cross reference between the male friends/clients of the 2 women, you find a common name, I'd say bingo...

Fox reported tonight that although the woman's home tested clean, the clothes she was wearing when she arrived at the hospital did not. Unfortunately, she was unconscious almost immediately and was not able to give any information. Or, at least, that's what "they" said--let's hope she did and they have a lead they want to protect.

I think that you nailed it, Carl. BTW: glad you were able to stop in!

Hi Meemur, thanks...

By the way folks, noticed I called the second anomalous anthrax victim a lawyer in my original post, I did mean accountant... don't have admin access here to clean up my boo-boos :)

Although lawyers and accountants do basically perform the same function, translating B.S. into what you want to hear, and convincing TPTB you're interpretation is correct... how well they do depends on how much they're paid :)... hummm... reminds me of another profession...

Foxnews saying tonight investigators are now saying that she may have come into contact with the person(s) sending the anthrax. Also statement that the anthrax was produced here in the US, FBI spokesman refused to elaborate....

More and more statements that suspicion of a lone individual with a grudge a distinct possibility...

Looking like my hunch is becoming more and more likely the actual case...

Where's the ex?????
