Old Photos of Downtown Shopping 1940 -1970's

greenspun.com : LUSENET : San Francisco History : One Thread

Hello: I am interested in any books or videos that would show the downtown shopping district (Union Square, etc. and Market St.) from 1940's through 1970's, if possible. My mom would love photos of some of the old stores (Livingston's, etc.) and restaurants (Pig & Whistle, etc.) in that area. Has there ever been anything published along those lines? Thanks for your help. Karel Palmer

If you haven't been here, you're missing LOTS of photos of the stores. There's an index by business name and things are stored by date. Wait till you see the photo of Manning's entrance at night.

For videos, check with KRON (I think ....) and see if they are selling their tapes of "San Francisco in the ____'s" -- they did a whole series of the 1950s, the 1960s, the 70s, 80s. Dunno if they got to the 90s yet.

Also, check out the photographs by Lisette Model (many can be bought on line). She took wonderful ones of people shopping on Market Street. Some have been reprinted as postcards and can be bought at places like Z Gallerie (look for stores that carry postcards of the Brown Twins, that sort of place).

The only thing I can think of right now is an old book which is titled "San Francisco, As It Is, As It Was."
