I know that a regular US PS2 will not play a CD-R VCD, because I have tried, but will a PS2 with a Mod Chip play a CD-R VCD? It seems to me that if a PS2 can play a commerical VCD, it should be able to play a homebrew VCD, but those punks at Sony disabled it because they want to stop DVD copying. It seems like it should work, but has anyone tried and gotten it to work?

It's not a chip problem, it's a laser problem. CD-R discs require a special laser beam to read. DVD players that support CD-R media have a 2nd laser that is used specifically with CD-R media. The real problem is that Sony is too cheap to put a 2nd laser beam in the PS2 just to read CD-R media. You could try burning VCD to CD-RW discs. CD-RW discs reflect back at a wavelength closer to commercial silver VCDs than CD-R discs do and sometimes DVD players will play CD-RW discs even if they don't support VCD. Some Sony DVD players that don't officially support CD-R media will play various CD-RW discs and Prime Peripherals brand CD-Rs. However, I gave a homemade SVCD on Prime Peripherals media to a friend that has a PS2 and it wouldn't play it, so I'm guessing that CD-RW probably won't work either, but you could give it a try.

I recommend with that extra money you all earn, instead of buying cd-r/rw's try investing in a dvd burner and sum dvds..believe me it worrks out sooo much cheaper, I should know I got saved my pennys for it all and all my movies run fine, never had a singular problem. You are right in a way, though cd-r/rw's do actually play in the ps2 if u buy a good one but they tend to damage then lens so....save ur cds guys, head out a buy sum dvds and a dvd burner now, they're not that expensive.
