prices at county fairs? (sheep)greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
I'm planning to attend the NY Sheep and Wool Festival up in Rhinebeck this weekend. My farming friend from NJ is interested in buying $400 worth of sheep. At an event like this, how many ewe lambs and bred ewes could we get within this budget? The breeds we're thinking of are Romney (fleece quality high), Jacob, and a Merino or Merino cross for the highest quality wool. In case it's not obvious, we only want the sheep for wool, not market. And they have to be tolerant of weather conditions in southwest NJ -- medium amount of rain, harshness of winter, fairly hot summers.

I don't know if this will answer your question as it has to do with rams. We purchased two first place Corriedales with papers at our county fair for $200 each. And with the sheep market right now, you might be able to get a very good price.
