Besides his personal troubles this was a creative period for Poe as he took on the literati of the big Yankee city as a scathing magazine critic. I think Virginia's tuberculosis started here with heartrending suffering during the winter. Well, before I start confusing matters it should be said he tried to establish his literary career up north where the national centers of literature dominated from NYC and Boston. He worked in a print shop in magazines and tried to write a blockbuster novel(Pym).
