Making Homemade Cereals, and Looking for Co-opgreenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
I am looking for recipes for making breakfast cereal in my home. My children love cereal but it costs so much at the grocery store. Maybe some granola recipes? Also, looking for a Food Co-op to order bulk from and possibly information on starting one in my area as there are none that I know of? Thanks. Marilyn

Where are you? On the West Coast you can check out Mountain People's Warehouse located in Grass Valley, CAlifornia.

I have recipes for granola and grape nuts that were always a hit growing up, and now my children love them. I will post them later today.

It's funny that you asked, because just today I picked up ingredients to make granola cereal (for breakfast as well as snacks). I haven't made it before, but it sounds great. It's a honey/rolled oats, vanilla, almond/raisin combination. If this sounds like something you might like, email me and I'll send you the recipe. By then, I'll know how it tastes too! God Bless :)Aimee gosse.

Where are you, Marilyn, there is a food co-op here in Ohio where you can purchase granola in 25 pound bags very reasonably, even cheaper than mixing it up yourself.

Here's my families recipes. These have gotten quite a work out in our family. This granola recipe is a very good basic recipe. I usually make 15 batches at once using my biggest bowl and my roasting pan. I use 1/3 almonds, 1/3 pecans, and 1/3 walnuts. I grind my nuts in an old metal meat grinder instead of chopping them. This works great. We add raisins or dried fruit to our own bowls. Golden Granola 3 c rolled oats 1 c shredded coconut 1 c choped nuts 1/4 c honey 1/4 c butter melted 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/4 to 1/2 tsp salt Combine all ingredients excepts raisins in ungreased 13x9 baking pan. Mix well, Bake at 350, 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown.( I just use several cookie sheets to cook it. Stirring occasionally) I have also dehydrated it which works well to.I make this less often because it seems to disappear instantly. It is not supposed to come out just like grape nuts, but we love it.
Amish Grape nuts
3 C whole wheat flour 2 tsp baking powder 1 C brown sugar 1 Tsp salt Add just enough buttermilk or sourmilk to bind together (about one cup) Press into ablong cake pan and bake at 350 until golden brown. About 45 minutes or longer. Cool. Crumble and dry in oven at low temp. Serve with milk.

Great minds think alike - I actually made granola for the first time Friday. Burned it a little (my oven heats irregularly and inconsistantly), but I will try it when I get around to picking up some soymilk. If it is too strong flavored, I will just mix in some peanut butter and choc chips and make granola bars!
