The United Nations appealed Tuesday for protection of civilians in Afghanistan after four employees of a U.N.-affiliated mine-clearing agency died in overnight U.S.-led raids on the Afghan capital. The deaths were the first civilian casualties independently confirmed in the 3-day-old air campaign. A spokeswoman for the United Nations in Islamabad, Stephanie Bunker, confirmed the deaths of four workers for the Afghan Technical Consultants, which had an office in a village two miles east of Kabul. The building was destroyed, Bunker said. "All four died on the spot," Bunker told a news conference in Islamabad. "Pieces of their bodies are still to be recovered from the wreckage." The building was located not far from a Taliban communications tower that may have been a target in Monday night's raid. "Today the U.N. Coordinator for Afghanistan appeals to the international community to protect innocent civilians while military strikes are going on," Bunker said.
