so excited...cookstove

Have a new (old) coodstove.

Our friends in WI have been keeping an eye out for a wood cookstove. Wanted one like I had. Well, this past weekend was our yearly visit to them and on Wed. they called to say that there was one in the paper and that they had gone to look at it. Said we could not see it until Sun. and that the owner would be out of town but neighbors would show it too us.

Anyway, when we got there on Sun the owner was there (she had been camping and it was so cold, got down to 25, that she came home).

The cookstove was in the house when she bought it a few years ago and had tried to sell it but no luck. She was asking $600.

It is a Wehrle, model Glorious #1218. Cream porcelan face, 6 bunner, warming ovens and resevoir. One lid has the concentric rings and one lid has a grate over it, haven't figured out what that is for yet. Anyway, it is in great shape, a small pin hole in the resevoir but Charles will be able to fix that easy.

I asked her if she is negotable and she said yes. I said I would give her $450 for the stove. She said she was looking to get $500. I said, I will give you a check now for $450, she said fine! We go back in about 4 weeks to pick it up.

Everything fell into place so I figure it was meant to be!!!

Can't wait to get it fixed and fire it up. She even gave me a picture of the stove.

Does anyone have any info on the manufacturer of this stove. Could not find much info in the net.

I know some women get excitied over clothes, jewelry and trips....I get excited over wood piles and cookstoves.

Wishing you enough.

Congratulations on your "new" woodstove! Mine is a Queen Atlantic circa 1920, with six burners, water reservoir and a warming shelf instead of the ovens. I also have the concentric rings and have never figured out what they were used for. Anyone know?? Wood cookstoves are great...I'd rather part with my washing machine, if I had to choose!!

Marcia,

I used to take out the concentric rings and put my walk right over the firebox. I have 2 size woks, so depending on which I was using, I would remove the appropiate ring.

I do love cooking on a woodstove.

Congratulations on your new stove!!

We have a Genesee Stove circa 1917 and I love it. It has 8 burners, 4 are gas and 4 are wood/coal. One burner has the concentric circles and I use this for certain kettles. I have a Club Aluminum kettle that is used only for popcorn and it fits perfectly on this. Popcorn just doesn't taste right if popped in any other kettle. Cooking with the wood takes some experimenting. You'll learn which areas are hotter than others and what wood works best. I received helpful wood stove cookbooks as christmas gifts. They were purchased through Lehmans. Christmas is coming, you might want to suggest it! www.lehmans.com

Good idea, Cordy!! Think I'll try it.

Charleen,

I have cooked on a woodstove before that is why I am especially exited about this one.

Your stove sounds wonderful! All those burners. I have seen commercial woodstoves but they are huge. How big is yours?

Oh, Cordy, congratulations! I am so jealous of you. For the past year I've been trying to find an affordable wood cookstove . . . I like the new ones, especially the Waterford model, but I just can't fathom paying upwards of $2500 for one. I check eBay everyday, but most of the stoves that I like are in Upstate New York or someplace unreasonably far away. I'm in Colorado.

Enjoy your stove!!

Hi. The concentruc rings are so different sizes of kettles - or pots- would fit onto one eye, or burner. With larger pots, more rings were removed to make the opening larger. Have fun!
