Is it possible to convert Movie Files from the VCD back to MPEG Files? I want to edit them in a video program???

Insert the vcd into your cd drive

Do not 'start' the vcd but open the drive

right click, open, choose 'MPEGAV' or may be a DAT file

highlight, go to edit

choose COPY TO FOLDER

VOILA!

I need to clarify that the MPEGAV refers to the file folder that the video file inhabits...this video file can be opened with Windows Media Player for verification...your file might have a different extension contingent upon your encoding source...works for me!

copy the *.dat file to your hard drive and play it back with window media player works fine, but if you need to edit the file, you really need to convert the *.dat file header to mpg. VCDGEAR2.0 will do just that for you. Go to www.vcdgear.com and down load it. It is a free program.

Copy the *.dat file to your Harddisk. Rename it to *.mpg. Thats all. No Conversion necessary!

there is easy way to convert (*.dat) file to (*.mpg) file, just rename the dat file and change the extention dat to mpg.

Alright, I actually came to this site because I was having problems as well with my DAT files.

Here's what I've found....

Yes, it's almost too easy. You can rename the .DAT extension to .MPG. It works....sometimes. Here lies the problem. In any case, where you can rename the .DAT extension to .MPG and it plays in windows media player....guess what, it would have played in windows media player as a plain old .DAT file.

In some cases tho, the .DAT file won't play in windows media player, and in cases like that, renaming it to .MPG won't usually do the trick.

That was the problem I was having when I found this site. So I took the advice of one of the previous answers. Go to www.vcdgear.com. I did, it worked like a charm!

I'm changing the vcd to mpeg then putting it on to a dvd for better quality. Will that work?

Video-CD .DAT files contain different header info than .MPG files. Simply re-naming the file extension is not a true conversion back to MPEG-1. You will most certainly not be able to author that file to DVD without your authoring program demanding re-conversion. Also, editing might not work (haven't tried that, only tried DVD authoring). This is why people are recommending VCD Gear. It will properly rewrite the headers so that the file is truly MPEG-1 and should then be compatible with DVD. If you are simply trying to play it on your PC, then play the .dat in Windows Media Player as is.
