You Want Fries With That Sheikh?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Luxuriamusic : One Thread |
I've been reading and re-reading one of my favorite books (the only book I have) about my absolute most favorite of 13th century sufi mystics (okay, so it's not like I have a top 10 list), Ibn Arabi. The book is Creative Imagination In The Sufism Of Ibn Arabi, by Henry Corbin. I LOVE IBN ARABI! Damn, I wish I could read arabic. Funny that I should be introduced to the thinking of Ibn Arabi through rumors of interdimensional travel cults and parallel worlds.

I would NOT describe myself as a religious person but I find it offensive when our news media implies that the religious fervor of so many islamic groups is only due to their ignorance or lack of education.... like they're all so pathetic and poor and if they only had the benefit of a decent education they would naturally aspire to be more like us. The Taliban's full of a lot of ignorant dumbfucks.... but the terrorists that attacked us were not so ignorant. They lived here in America and they flew airplanes! Thats not the point I wanted to make though. I just meant to say that religious fervor and being knowledgeable and educated and scholarly are not mutually exclusive things....

Have you ever eaten REALLY good Lebanese food??? There's this INCREDIBLE restaraunt in Cincinnati Ohio.... its like nothing I've ever experienced. It's family owned and very small.... they only have tables for maybe 3 or 4 parties. The mother and daughters cook and prepare all the food and the father molests the guests! He likes to speak right into your face, asks you what you think of everything, shows you the proper way to eat, kisses & puts his hands all over the women and threatens to make them go back to the kitchen where his wife will show them how to cook. He's actually quite charming and very funny but its definitely NOT for timid midwesterners!

I suppose I really like Ethiopian food. It's no surprise; I pretty much like everything I eat but that spongey rubbery bread stuff is so Star Trek!
