Rock Addition Update

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

Been a slow year in my bathroom kitchen addition. Hope to have all the walls and roof done by this time next year. Anyway I thought above the windows and doors I would put in a line of pretty blue or green tile to break up and soften all those rocks. what do you think?

Wow Kirk, you have done a lot as far as I can see!!! What kind of tile were you thinking?? Sounds like it might be really neat.

Your place is so beautiful, Kirk. I don't think you need any tile, its gorgeous as it is, but I love tile too. How are you feeling these days anywho?

Hi Kirk-Your place looks great. Speaking of breaking up the look of the rock, my hubby had a great idea for fixing our terrible old windows in our rock house. The old windows are very tall and skinny and replacing them with the same size would be very expensive. Anyway, he came up with the idea of putting a row of glass block on the top and bottom so the windows could then be replaced with normal size stock windows. It sounds like it might work and might be very pretty too. What do you think?

Kirk, if you mean putting tiles on the outside of the walls, I don't think it's necessary. If you mean inside, for you to look at, it probably would be a fun touch.

Debra, you've probably already thought of this, but what about "stacking" window units? Like a casement window with an awning window below or above (or both). I know you can order stock windows ganged together that way from some companies.

Diane: I'm really trying hard to only spend 300 or less a month on building so I don't go in debt. Sometimes it seems like it will never get done but As long as its fun thats whats important. Right?

EM: I feel great!! Finally. Still a little sore in the kidney areas but thats gettin better too. I had no idea that infections could make you so sick. Thanks for asking!

Joy: I was thinking tile for the outside. That wall you see in the picture will be about 14ft high with 3 more small windows on the second story so I wasn't sure if it needed some color. I could change the color of the concrete roof later if it needs it....

Debra I've seen those glass blocks and I think that is a great idea! It would also let in a little light too. Wonder if those blocks come in different sizes? Hmmm...

Dear Kirk,

Thanks for the latest update on your progress. Looks beautiful! Last weekend while driving through Vermont I saw a wonderful old stone barn and immediately thought of you.

Wishing you enough.

Kirk, to answer your question about glass block sizes. . .

Yes, they do come in various sizes and clarity. The standard sizes are 6" x 6" x 4" thk. or 8" x 8" x 4" thk.. You can get corner units also. They come in numerous clarities also; frosted, opaque, clear, etc. Call a window shop, don't buy them there as they are usually a little more expensive, but they have the catalogs showing the choice. Good luck and hope this info helps.

Trennie tell Lea it works but its a little unstable! It sets on a couple of boards and has a wax rim gasket thing that sticks to the bottom. In my haste I've almost fallen over backwards a couple a times!! Also I had to chase out spiders a couple a times cause they sneak under the lid. Hey buts it sits like a Cadilac compared to my old beat up outhouse!!!...Kirk
