Chicken Mating

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Some friends and I are having an argument as to how chickens do in fact have sex. And whether Chickens have penises or Cloacas(sic) or if it something entirely new. I hope that you will be able to clear up this problem for us. Thank you for any information you are able to provide. Paul

Roosters do not have penises. A rooster and a hen mate by making contact with each other's cloaca's and he passes the sperm to her that way. Works well enough though I understand the true rumpless Aurucana breeds have some difficulty because the lack of a tail on the hen makes it difficult for the rooster to successfully mount.

My sister-in-law thinks that the hen lays the egg and then the rooster comes along and set on it to fertilize it. I laugh everytime I think of her saying that.

Ok, but ducks DO have a penis, don't they? Kind of a corkscrew-y lookin' thing? I know I've seen SOMETHING poking out when they get up on the girl ducks.

Heck, when my ducks and chickens are mating my children who are 8 & 11 tell me, "Mom, don't look out there the chicken are doin' it again!"
