Increased Costs to the Church in 2004greenspun.com : LUSENET : A.M.E. Today Discussion : One Thread |
With the increase in retired Bishops by 7 in 2004. Will the Church suffer further increases to support these expenses? Should this be a variable in the consideration of potential candidates? Looking for feedback.Bod Bless You

A minor oversight - our two located bishops also retire, leaving an additional 9 joining our retirement ranks.

Thank you JerrylThis only increases the question. What do you think?

Dear Bro. Brangman,I was under the impression there was a pension and retirement plan to sustain Bishops without burden and strain on the Connection. I am aware other mainline denominations make these provisions for their retired servants. If a program is not in place one should be implemented ASAP.

There will be only 7 new, not 9. New bishops were elected in 2000 to replace the located ones. That's why we ended up with 4 new bishops rather than the expected 2. Anything (almost) can happen at GenCon - that's why it's so important.

Let me clarify a few numbers.
- 9 bishops are due to retire in 2004. This includes 7 active and 2 located. All 9 will receive retirement benefits at the conclusion of the General Conference (I'm not sure if they're still under the "1/2 Salary" approach, or under a new approach).
- 6 Districts will become vacant under the current alignment in 2004. In addition, the "Ecumencial Officer" seat will be vacant. If the church chooses to maintain this seat, then we will need to elect 7.
- Some discussion has been heard in meetings about electing 8. This implies the possibility of creating an additional district. Prior to GenCon 2000 (at Convocation IV, I believe), 4 realignment proposals were floated, each of which referred to a "District 20". If we continue along these lines (rather than consolidation) then 8 bishops would be the target.
I apologize for any confusion my earlier reference to 9 retiring may have caused.

Thank you Jerryl. This is valuable information. I believe our next question should be around more effective and efficient management of our Church. God Bless You

Rev. AlexanderThank you for your comments. I agree something should already be in place. We should look at our economic development and operational structures next. Again Thank you God Bless You
