Study: Schoolchildren on vouchers did better

Cleveland schoolchildren in private and parochial schools on taxpayer-financed vouchers performed slightly better than peers in public schools, says an Indiana University study out Tuesday. The Indiana Center for Evaluation says children who began the pro- gram as kindergartners showed slight but ''statistically significantly higher academic achievement'' between the 1998-2000 period. The Cleveland Scholarship Program has granted 2,600 students the $1,550-a-year voucher. The program was struck down earlier this year by a 2-1 panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to decide whether to take the Cleveland case on Oct. 1. The Institute for Justice, a public interest law firm that supports vouchers, applauded the study.

However, the Ohio Federation of Teachers, which challenged the program in court, was unimpressed with the academic gains and says, ''It's time to pull the plug on this failed experiment.''

WHICH FAILED EXPERIMENT? The Teacher's "ability" to TEACH?

Why are teacher tests secret in Illinois?

Pick a catalog. What's the least challenging degree anywhere? What major offers the most chance to get lost in ethereal bullshit than good old EDU?

Most of them were a pretty dumb bunch. Not by my sandards but by anyone else who's seen 'em in action on campus. Remember back. They were the ones you toasted at bridge for nickle a point.

It's gotten worse.
